Canon tethering on Capture One 7
Hi,
This is a description of a workaround for Canon shooters who have problems tethering to Capture One Pro 7.0 in combination with OS X Lion and Mountain Lion.
Status
Currently Canon has not yet released the needed software (SDK or Software Development Kit) to support both Lion (up to 10.7.5) and Mountain Lion (10.8.x). However, Canon's latest EOS Utility 2.12.x does support Lion and Mountain Lion for tethering. As soon as Canon releases the new SDK and Phase One builds it into CO7, this workaround becomes obsolete.
Solution/workaround
What I propose and explain in this post is how you get the best from Canon and put it into Capture One Pro 7. In plain English: copy the SDK in EOS Utility and place it into Capture One Pro 7.
Prerequisites
You need administrative privileges on your system (be an admin, not regular user).
Process
The process involves the following steps
1) download and install EOS Utility 2.12.0 (or later)
2) get the SDK from EOS Utility
3) replace the SDK in Capture One Pro 7.0 with the newer version from EOS Utility
The steps described below may seem complicated and overwhelming at first sight, but it is really easy to do.
Step 1
Go to your localized Canon site and download and install EOS Utility 2.12.0 Updater (or later). If you do not have already EOS Utility installed on your computer, you only need to insert your Canon EOS Digital Solution disk in your CD/DVD drive for detection and the updater will install the software.
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h366/Paul_S57/Finder-EOSUtil.png
Step 2
In Finder, go to the EOS Utility program icon (Applications/Canon Utilities/EOS Utility). As you might know, this a folder with subfolders.
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h366/Paul_S57/EOSUtility01.png
Right-click on the application (do not start it up), select "Show Package Contents" (SPC).
The path to the SDK folder is:
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h366/Paul_S57/EOSUtility03.png
Copy the entire contents of folder A to a temporary location (Desktop for example). This should be 4 items.
Step 3
In Finder look up Capture One in the Applications folder.
Tip
Before we proceed, you might want to rename it, for example into "Capture One - Canon". This allows you to install a second and unaltered version of Capture One 7 in the Applications folder as a backup and fall back scenario. This also prevents you from accidentally overwriting the modified version when installing an update.
As with EOS Utility, do not start it but right-click in Finder on Capture One and select "Show Package Contents" (SPC). Now we drill into it until we find the SDK folder:
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h366/Paul_S57/Finder-CO7-CapCorSrvr.png
Copy the the 4 items from the A folder of EOS Utility to this Capture One A folder to replace 4 items with the same name.
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h366/Paul_S57/CO6-folderA.png
Close the Finder window and start Capture One, connect your camera and shoot tethered.
Good luck!

Hi There,
I am not a genius in the computer world, but not an idiot either.
I have followed the thread of what to do to get to the SDK...
I CANNOT get the SHOW CONTENTS up in the finder...( not showing )
Yes have got a user with ADMIN...still the same
So I can go no further....have spent several hours on this....
Running latest Mac OSX 10.7.5
Can anyone help, someone...anyone...someone much more clever than me hopefully 😕
Thanking all in advance

Hi Scott,
Not sure what stops you, but some tips might help.
- If you are not able to open the context menu of the application in the Finder by right-clicking, try Ctrl+click or use the Action button from the Finder's toolbar (looks like a cogwheel with a little triangle at the right to it).
- Make sure you select the application FIRST before you open the context menu.
Hope this helps. If you still have troubles, let us know which steps you have taken and with what result.0 -
Hi Paul,
Firstly thanks for your quick reply back and secondly thanks for your patience with me and the issue I am having....
I have read through the thread / info on your site on the EDSDK stuff.
I can bring all up in the finder etc, exactly as shown in the work around dated Oct 26..
This is where I can go no further...
I CANNOT GET in the finder window after right clicking EOS Utility the info " SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS "
It just does not appear on the finder menu ???? Must be something I am doing wrong....
So because I cant get the " SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS " I can go no further.
Look forward to your next guidelines.....and again thank you for your kind assistance.
regards
SCOTT0 -
Also Paul,
If it helps.....I can take some pics of my screen to show you exactly what appears on screen.
Would this help ??
Can you supply an email address to send to....
Thanks again

Hi Scott,
Posting images: if you can post it on the web, you can past the link in your post here. If you can use the tag, it is viewable directly from the post, as I did in my original post in this thread.
I came across what might happen, just checking:
- You need to click on EOS Utility program; note that it is placed in a folder with the same name. So, go to:
Programs (folder) > Canon Utilities (folder) > EOS Utility (folder) > EOS Utility (program)
Another check:
- Can you open the Capture One application by right-clicking on it and select "Show Package Contents".
If this does not help, a screen shot might be very helpful.0 -
Does Phase bother reading these posts? What the hell? I thought I had the tethering thing under control thanks to this thread. It is glitchy as heck. I'm also having problem with importing files off of my card reader. 7 also seems to be having problems generating previews during import.
This is so damn frustrating. Aaaaargh!
A.T.0 -
Sorry Paul
You obviously work with Phase. But holy cow! Why is this so complicated. Why put out a new version if it's got so many issues?

I've had the thought of trying the CO 7 workaround, only inserting the SDK from my older version of EOS Utility, but that might be asking for too much. Seems that I will need to keep a copy of CO 6.4.2 on my computers just for the 1dsMk2.
Interesting thought to make a workaround for an older camera. You could keep CO 6.4.2 on your system or you could copy the Canon SDK from 6.4.2 to CO 7 and see whether that works.
Just for information: the SDK in CO 6.4.2 is much newer than 8.4 as you suggested, but that does not matter.
Does anyone know if this workaround will enable tethering of my Canon 1ds mrk II to CO7 ?0 -
Hi Paul,
Bingo !! What I was not doing was leaving the highlight over the EOS Utilities before CTRL - CLICK.
Anyway...got in....followed the procedure as per instructions.....
But sad to say that the same error seems to be coming up with the Tether...CAPTURE ERROR....folder....over and over...plus noe the Capture One wont let me log in saying that my profile is incorrect ????
Oh dear....I reset password etc...asking me to re enter LICENSE KEY...so I did...but same story.
Not sure what to do.....just sitting in a corner eating Panadol !! hahahahah
Will wait to hear from you, if any further thoughts.

Hi Paul,
Thanks a lot for posting your workaround. I followed your instructions, and everything works nicely!
I've been using CO for a couple of versions now, without tethering. Never needed it in nature and sports. Now I gave it a try, for macro. But I initially failed, like others too.
Your workaround works fine for 1D m3 and 1D X, using the files from the EOS Utility update from Canon's website. The system is a 2009 MacBook Pro with ML 10.8.2 and CO 7.0.1.

I have a shoot coming up where it's easy for the client to name images as they pop up and star them, approve, etc.
I updated to 7.01 and still cannot connect..the camera does not even show up...
any NEW workarounds to date?
I'm sick of hacking into preferences and naming new versions of the app, etc...
I use a Phase One P45+ as well and would like both cameras to work on the latest, $99 upgrade that I paid for...0 -

The workaround posted in the beginning of this thread applies to CO 7.0.1 as well.0 -
Thank you so much Paul!
Absolutely made my day!

The workaround looks more complicated as it is. Even with minimal computer knowledge it is done within a few minutes.0 -

Hi Scott,
From your description it is difficult to give proper guidance. Regarding your license key, I noticed you have different accounts here on the forum. Since accounts are connected to license key, another account can not use the key.
I suggest it is best to contact support, to get your account and key relation straight, and next, your tethering issue.0 -

Why not try it? When you rename your Capture One application, you can safely install another one and give it a shot. The combination of CO7 users with an Canon 1Ds mkII is relatively small, hence little or no response.0 -
I have followed the work around for CO 7 and for CO 6.4.2. I am using a mark ii with newly installed mountain lion on a 27inch Imac. In both cases I get CO to tether the camera for one shot. The shot never comes into the preview or the capture folder. Then the connection goes away and I can't get it to tether again. I can successfully tether to my older MB pro running Mac OS 10.6.8 and CO 6.3.1 HELP!! 0 -
thanks, worked for me
guess i can cancel this: PhaseOne support case number: 1168810 -

Has anyone been able to get the Canon tethering work around to work using the Canon EOS 1DX? I have tried several times and can't get the camera to tether.
Thanks!

took a while but i managed to get this working (if you dont have the original disc as was the case for me you can download a canon utility update which actually contains the whole software if you know where to look - there are a few links to this.
Problem for me is that it worked during test, after closing down and getting to a job the following day it didnt work at all..
is anyone else having n issue with this solution?
Also is there any news on canon camera compatability - likely any time soon?0 -
I made a necessary ( yet unwanted) workflow decision in this regard: I am now shooting tethered in Adobe LightRoom when using DSLR cameras.
I am editing the RAW's there and then transfer the Preselects to another folder, to then import and start using CO7 for processing...
As painful as this is, it not only works smooth and perfectly fine, but also, I have a full back up of the images in the camera's CF or SD cards.
The workaround suggested previously, worked kind of fine in CO 7 and then broke again in 7.0.1, and even when it works, you have to keep the cameras in NO SLEEP mode, in order not to loose the connection to CO7, or else, you have to restart everything, time and again.
I do not understand how Canon is not supplying Phase One with the right code and support, however, the code has been working seamlessly (including when camera goes to sleep) in LightRoom since version 3 and now in version 4, across all updates (current is 4.3).
My take is, there is an issue of software coding that requires further research, until CO7 works like LightRoom or better. Somehow Adobe sorted it out for real a long time ago, regardless of any version of Canon SDK !
Phase One please help us out with this!
Thanks!0 -
im going to have a look at lightroom, never used it for tethering. The workaround seems very temperamental - a more basic one that ive just tried is to use canon utility to connect to the camera and just set the destination folder to a capture folder in C1, bit slower and you have to manually advance frames but at least I know it will work. 0 -

Did you install the workaround again in 7.0.1? The update removes the SDK files you installed in the workaround, so you have to repeat the procedure.[quote="Photoshooter" wrote:

From what I have understood, Adobe Lightroom does not use the Canon SDK. This limits the tethering functionality and from other users I heard it is slower.[quote="Photoshooter" wrote:

I am confident they will.0 -
Paul, just as you think, I always thought LightRoom would not fit the bill, but, to my utmost surprise, it does.
The seemingly slower performance compared to CO is barely due to the files being copied simultaneously in the camera's card and the computer, so yes, you may need about one more second to see the image on the screen, but that's it, and you can help this out by using faster CF or SD cards.
Yes, I refreshed the Canon SDK thing in CO 7.0.1, but, as others have reported, it is still behaving erratically, and you do not want this type of behavior when working with clients by your computer or iPad.
I am still hoping CO7 becomes the only piece of software in my production workflow.

Great! Now it works!
It was easy, but why don't phase one is building it direct? This is supposed to be a professional Software?

Capture One 7.1

Great thanks PhaseOne all working with OS 10.8.2 MacBook Pro and 8 core tower

It is a Professional Software... as such we're not going to be unprofessional and do anything that is against our agreements with Canon. Support could not be built into the software until a release was officially supplied by Canon. 😉
Thank you all for your patience, I'm glad there was a workaround posted by some of our clever users to help everyone through it.
Please now use Capture One 7.0.2
