I have v8 and want to upgrde to v9 but I am not sure how to do so? When I get a new key# do I just open up cp1v8 and put the new key # that they send me in there or do I need to install cp1v9 and put it in there?

    Download and install.

If you install alongside V8 you can run V9 in trial mode for 30 days to familiarise yourself before changing over (if you wish).

Your key for V9 will need to be applied at some point of course - you can do that my logging in to your account and activating. The V9 key will allow you to run earlier versions as well if you have them installed.

So I down load v9 it wont remove v8 so I can try it first I like that. I have not got the upgrade yet I will have to down load v9 and try it

    Yep.

Just run the install. NOT an update. It will create a V9 folder.

It may also need to install a .NET version from Microsoft before the C1 install can run. Depends on whether your system already has the required .NET software installed.

After installation some things like preferences and other settings and so on may be shared with V8 but in general that is not a problem so long as you are aware that changing a few things in one place may also change them elsewhere.

If you want to keep testing entirely separate DO NOT open existing sessions or catalogues - just create some new, small (to start with) sessions or catalogues to play with.

If you do open an existing session or catalogue you will be offered the opportunity to upgrade it to V9 ( take a copy somewhere safe first but C1 should create a back up session file or catalogue anyway so double safety.)

Once the V9 session or catalogue is created there is a second step you can take for the images within the catalogue to convert then to the V9 processing "engine". Or not should you choose to leave them in an earlier form.

If using sessions you have the option to update as you go, one image at a time. Or indeed one variant at a time. (You can take, for example, a V8 processed image, create a cloned variant, convert that to the V9 processing engine and then compare side by side with the original V8 version.)

I don't use catalogues but I assume there are equivalent options.

One thing to be aware of is that, as is usually the case with such things, once you have upgraded the image processing to the new engine V9 cannot reverse the process without taking the image back to the V8 engine and, therefore, losing any of the processing related to the new V9 features. In effect that means you either revert to your saved backup of V8 stuff or make sure you retain the V8 variants of the original images if you really want to keep them as they were.

However, based on what I have looked at so far, I suspect that the majority of people for the majority of images will be able to move them up to the V9 engine without any concerns about adverse effects on the appearance based on some specific use of earlier feature sets. Of course that is something that people need to decide for themselves.
