How to change default settings????

In 3.7 there is a tab under Preferences where you can set a default sharpening value for all images. In 3.7 I have adapted to a setting that works best with my workflow. In the new version, I see no way to do this. I must go ( and rememeber to go) to the sharpening setting, set it for one image, and then copy that setting to all the other images, every single time I process images, and with each and every batch of images. It is SO MUCH EASIER to just set this in default.

Am I missing something?

    If you go to the sharpening section in the Detail tab, you'll see a little drop down arrow on the right hand side. There you are able to set your default sharpening values.

    Well... maybe it helps. I made the settings as I like them and clicked the little down arrow. Then I opened a folder of images. But the settings were not my default they were the program default. In other words, my clicking the down arrow did not have any effect on the images I opened. Do I need to do something else so that new images will automatically have this setting?

    I have also noticed something odd with this.

    From what I can see, defaults are saved in each image file’s “settings file†and once you have a “settings file†C1 picks up defaults from there for a specific image.

    Additionally, I think the defaults are stored in memory by C1 and if you change them you need to restart the application for them to take properly?????

    Try this…

    Change your default settings, restart C1 and each file you open will take the new defaults APART from those files that you have already made adjustments to (i.e. they have a settings file with defaults already).

    Regarding application of default settings, this is how I think it works (not much different from what Chris just wrote, with some additions however).

    The default settings (for sharpening for example) are read and applied when a new raw file is opened and a settings file is created (settings file may appear on disk only after you made your first adjustment, not sure). If you change your default setting afterwards, it will be applied to new files only. You can discuss whether this makes sense to you. It does for me, it prevents older files from being altered without my intention. The reason I changed my defaults is when I migrated to another camera. I don't want my old images changed with the default of the new camera.

    This behavior in CO4 is the same as in CO3 (and earlier I believe). CO4 is a slightly more sophisticated regarding sharpening default settings. It had by default different default settings for different cameras. I have not tested yet what happens to these different default settings once I have set my own.

    Mike..........I have spent a ton of time on this.

    In 3x you would load files, crop, adjust exposure, and put in batch. This is 3 steps. Then when you click process..........(after selecting "the appropriate recipe/recipes" ......which already had presets set..........(size, jpg,tiff/whatever).............3x would automatically sharpen/set saturation/make a sub-folder/process/send to sub-folder.........(and photoshop if selected) and you are done.

    Make a cd/email for clients.

    NOTHING could be faster/better!!!

    I have spent loads of time lately........(never used either one before).......in lightroom and camera raw.............both are faster than 4x getting out quick proofs or ready to go to photoshop and then printing.

    I "tried" Paul's set up......but you are still adding extra steps.........as opposed to NO steps........yes saving the "old" setting in a file you do not want to change is good, but you are "only" changing" the files you are about to process..........so this should have no effect on the "old" files.

    I do all my finial work in photoshop........so none of that matters anyway.......(perhaps just MY workflow???)

    Also, I have asked before...........any way to set presets for saturation??.......(without going the copy/paste each time you edit a folder).

    I just had a new computer build.........vista 64.......so I am "stuck" with 4x.

    My computer guy says to network my new and old one......do the first stages in 3x on the old computer and the photoshop/printing/etc on the new one.

    Any thoughts on this.

    Currently, CO4 does -unfortunately- not offer that level of preset or default setting as CO3 has for sharpening and saturation in its Preferences.
