Tip - cleaning up the cache
C1 3 tidied up after itself and deleted its cached files. C1 4 doesn't, and litters your hard drives with COP files (these are the preview files) - this can quickly build up, and a quick calculation showed 1.5 gigabytes of COP files on my hard disk! 🤓
Keeping COP files makes sense to avoid wasting time regenerating previews if you have a lot of images in a folder. But if, like me you liked the way C1 3 clean up after itself and deleted preview files automatically, I found Eraser (http://eraser.heidi.ie) - a free program that will delete unwanted files automatically at a scheduled time (I have no connection with the software).
How to use. First, start Eraser and create a new task in Scheduler. On the Data tab:
• Select "File"
• Select "Use wildcards" and "Include subfolders"
• Type D:\My Pictures\Photographs\*.cop
(use your own folder structure instead of "D:\My Pictures\Photographs" - which is just where I store my images)
On the Schedule tab, add a schedule.
As has been said time and again, it was perverse of P1 to omit several basic functions of C1 3 from C1 4, so that C1 3 world class for quick, easy workflow - one of the reasons people like me chose C1 in the first place.
A lot of these functions (like an option to clean up the cache automatically as in C1 3) would seem straightforward to implement - I really should have to use a third-party bodge! I've been waiting patiently for 18 months for P1 to put back omitted C1 3 functions, yet instead they waste time and money on rubbish like JPG handling - not something most C1 were exactly clamouring for!!!!!!!!! 🤬 <sigh>

Thanks Rich. Mine erased away for 30 minutes or more!
Cheers,

I noticed this just today and spent time erasing these unwanted files. Why, however, are they scattered through out numerous folders? They are in the "cache" folder as well as the "settings 45" folder. This is really, really a pain. 0 -

They should only be in the Cache folder. In the adjacent Settings45 folder you find the *.COS (not *.COP) files. These contain your adjustments and are in general (by measure of the general public here) preserved.
Cleaning up *.COP (preview) files is a running feature request.0 -
As Paul says, don't delete the COS files since these store any adjustments you make to raw files! COS files are small anyway, so they're not a problem.
As to why files are scattered everywhere, C1 3 had a single, central cache that everyone liked. Then C1 4 changed this: each folder containing images that you browse to using C1 4 will have a cache folder created inside it. Net result: a hard drive littered with files that can use gigabytes of space. Great! 🤬
Ever since the first C1 4 came out, we've been asking Phase One to give us the option of a central cache, or at least an option to delete the preview files automatically after a set time, as C1 3 did.
And we're still waiting ... I'm not holding my breath. Phase One don't seem interested ...0 -
I'd suggest the opposite...PhaseOne cares VERY much. The move to caching WITH the image files solves the majority of issues people had with the program regarding shutdown time and the extra steps to archive. Where that data is stored is fairly fundamental to the design....and as I work with the program I have to wrap my head arround why some things are better if different from V3....I have come to the conclusion that the benefits of archiving data with the files as part of the workflow are far superior to a central cache.
When you think about it...a central cache needed cleaning just to be efficient. The present caching with the image files....given the cheap storage available...is much more logical. The data/preview folders are not really scattered about the landscape of your storage, they are logically stored with the image files they reference. When 1TB drives are under $100, how much time and effort does one want to spend saving the 1/1000th of that space that the previews take up?
While that will probably happen if enough users wish it, IMHO it does not seem to be a high priority as far as usability/function....so I doubt that many who did not use V3 will even notice it......0 -
I have both C1 3.7.8 and 4.8.1 installed on my new Vista x64 box with 8GB RAM. I keep C1 3.7.8 around because I got used to its shortcut keys and my 5D is still supported by it. For my 5D2, I have no choice but to use C1 4.8.1.
C1 3.7.8 still suffers two major performance issues on this fairly powerful PC due to its centralized cache system. It takes quite a while to generate the previews and can take FOREVER to shut down (exit), sometimes as long as 10-20 minutes. When dealing with a huge number of images, I have to shut it down sometimes or it would crash and take my changes with it.
C1 4.8.1 starts up quickly and my favorite part is that is shuts down quickly. It however, tends to overexpose the images though when I use the auto-adjustment feature. Has anyone noticed that?

Yes, now that you mention this: C1 4.anyversion always has overexposed with auto-adjustment. (It's funny how You get used to a thing like that, and become accustomed to readjusting the exposure slider -0,1 - 0,2.) Standard outcome of 80 % of my images on auto-adjustment: +0,30 - 0,40, reálly too bright, although Tiff-files from C1.4 tend to print slightly darker than viewed on screen (something PSD-files from photshop-camera raw conversions- somehow dón't do). So for printing the auto-adjustment feature seems to give a realistic level of brightness with my setup.

You can make 3.x close down as quickly as 4 by simply going to preferences>Preview Cache and select Never for automatically clean up cache. Then it is the same as 4, nothing is deleted unless you go in and do it manually.
If only C1 would get off their asses and add those shortcut keys back to 4 so their software is actually usable...[quote="Nelson1" wrote:

Great tip! I just made the change and will see how fast it closes down next time when I have process a large number of files.[quote="dan122" wrote:

I would like to see they allow the Process key to be one finger push such as the Insert key again. Hitting Ctrl+D hurts my pinky (occupational injury after 26 years of heavy programming). I had to remap it with my Logitech G11 keyboard to be a single-push key. I did the same with Ctrl+Shift+A (Deselect All), Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+F. Can those shortcut keys be changed? They are not ergonomic in my humble opinion.0
