Preset lens profiles

You may want to create a Support Case to get an official answer to the question based on what the Phase team does for lens profiling.

At least one other site quite well known and respected for its lens tests makes it quite clear that it test results may vary by sensor and camera model (suggesting that any correction profile might also be similarly influenced) from the same manufacturer.

They very clearly state that test results cannot be assumed to be consistent across systems.

So my guess is that the answer to your question is that you might try the Canon profile for the lens and use it if happy with it (assuming that you feel a need to tweak the lens output in the first place). However what is available for Canon my not be the very best alignment of results possible when used with a different system.

That begs a lot of questions for policy decisions when testing third party lenses and, potentially, what to offer if a system can use adapters to facilitate the use of many different lens mounts. Obviously if you can use a lens/mount combination but the camera does not identify it there is no automated lens correction possible unless applied manually.

However that would not in itself prevent a lens being assessed (per mount and per fitment body family) and a profile developed for it. In theory. However there are potentially one heck of a lot of unknowns once you get into adapters and so on and the task would surely become enormous and very marginally worthwhile commercially. In fact in many cases probably never likely to be viable even if feasible.

No doubt we could drift into an extended debate about this topic but I suspect that the answer to your question is that there may be differences between systems and so Phase would need to have a Nikon mount version of the lens to test before releasing supported profiles. However if you apply the Profile used for the Canon version and see benefits from it with which you are happy ... then use it.

Thanks Grant - I'll raise a proper tech question.

This is assuming that Phase One has a different lens profile for each camera body. Capture One identifies camera body and then picks the lens so this might be the case, but I have not come across a statement from Phase One stating that. As far as I know only DXO clearly states that their profiles are body/lens combo specific. Also, as I mentioned in a different thread, there is a significant variation in results between DXO and Capture One for the same camera/lens setup. Issue of profiling lenses via adapters on various camera bodies would be too complex to be viable, I fully agree.

Would be good to hear from Phase One on this.
