XMP issue is of great concern
This xmp issue is of great concern. I imported all my RAW files with accompanying xmp into a master catalogue, made a few changes to keywords, © etc and synced the changes back to the xmp (This is the Peter Krogh tutorial explaining how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxmUepqGzCA).
Every single time, the metadata has been written back to the RESOURCE FORK of the actual RAW file and not to the xmp sidecar!
This is issue difficult to detect/notice even when you open the files in another application because the application is reading the all of the metadata from the xmp and RAW file combined. When I remove the xmp and open the RAW file in Preview, Bridge, PhotoMechanic etc ALL OF THE KEYWORDS, © AND OTHER METADATA IS THERE!
Media Pro is writing BACK to the resource fork of the file on every occasion.
I have 37,000 RAW files compromised because the metadata has been added to the actual RAW file and NOT THE SIDECAR as intended. The golden rule is to never change a RAW file in any way, that's why we have xmp.
It is worth testing your RAW files without the xmp present to see if the metadata is embedded in the RAW. These are CR2 files and I believe this issue goes way back to previous versions of this software. None of the RAWs became corrupt, but I believe the potential is there.
As a precaution, I converted all 37,000 CR2 files to DNGs and moved them to a Lightroom workflow.

What are the settings of your 'Sync Annotations"?

My syncing is set to "Always". However, all of my RAW files always have an xmp prior to importing to Media Pro. So the sync settings make little difference as Media Pro is not deciding if it has to create an xmp or not, the xmp is already there. So it should just sync the data that has been added/changed.
Have a look at the video link above if you have not seen it. Peter Krogh describes the process and says that it doesn't matter what the sync settings are, if the original RAW file was imported to Media Pro with an existing xmp. Media Pro will just sync the change back to the xmp. He suggests using "Only when unable to embed".

I checked my raw files and I have the same "problem" with Media Pro. My sync settings are set to always. I import my files from capture one with a xmp sidecar file made for each file. Its strange to see something like this. Media Pro seems to have some issues regarding xmp files. But this surprises me. If anyone can shed some light on this behavior of Media Pro that would be welcome.
