Creating Collections Across Filesystem Folders

I may be trying to fit a square peg into a round hole here but I'm attempting to use fewer tools for a simple job. I use Lightroom to manage my image files. If I want to look one up at random, then that's where I turn. But for a give shoot -- say 4 days worth, I might have 6 folders of images and I want to create collections with images from several folders.

Is there a way to drill down into subfolders so that I can have:

San Francisco
> Tuesday
>> Models Outdoor
>> Models Indoor
> Wednesday
>> Golden Gate Bridge

and find all the 3+ star images using a smart collection?

  Try this:
  Create a new album(not a smart album) and drag all your images from each subfolder into it.
  Now you can perform a search in this album and filter your desired criteria.

  So the proposed fix is to reorganize the images in the filesystem?

  Albums are independent from the filesystem.

  Perhaps Smart Albums are an option as well. Based on your criteria, a Smart Album is automatically populated with images.
  
  Albums and Smart Albums are pointers to images within a session. For Smart Albums it is best to make all your image folders known in the Session Favorites.
