Alignment tool aka 'show/hide grid and guides'

Am I missing something or is this tool very limited? It seems only to place two rather arbitrary guides over the image in the viewer. Placement of these guides seems to have no objective measurement control. There also seems to be almost no reference to this tool in the user manual, and a search of the site turns up almost nothing. It does seem to interact with the crop tool, but in a fairly limited way. What is this about?

  I think you are confused about the purpose of some tools. Maybe this helps:
  
  The guide lines are for measuring, comparing, checking only. They do not adjust and are not related to an editing tool.
  
  The Straighten tool (cursor tools) help to straighten either horizontal or vertical.
