9min 45sec for Catalogue to Open - Record?
Just timed how long it took to fully open my 37214 image catalogue - 9min 45sec this must be some sort of record.
My machine is not slow- i7 processor, 32gig RAM, nvidia 960 graphics card, 1 Terabyte SSD. The time it took the catalogue to open and be fully useable is just unacceptable back to using Capture One in session mode as a secondary alternative to Lightroom. I had hoped to make a complete move to Capture One but the catalogue function is just not acceptable at present.
By the way the usual advice of using lots of small catalogues is just not appropriate for me, I specifically use the catalogue to search for particular types of image amongst all my pictures.

Those reports of very slow to open catalogs are very weird indeed. I just had a possibly ridiculous idea, but worth checking nonetheless : could it be that Capture One spends all this time regenerating some or all previews? Could you check the creation time of yours?
First step of course would be to file a bug report with Phase One, as always. The more people tell them about it, the more likely they are to (be able to) fix it.0 -
I think it has more to do with Metadata.
I did notice that since turning on the XMP sidecar files in preferences (during a futile attempt to look for a suitable cataloging replacement application), on opening the my catalog a small window with a "Metadata" in the title bar and a progress bar pops up on screen for a second or 2 apparently accessing metadata in images? Can't remember exactly what the wording was but I'll update thread tonight to clarify.
My catalog is only 2000 images big, and it takes just 2 seconds, and I'm on a 6th Gen i7, 16Gb DDR4 and SSD and GTX970 graphics card. Obviously nowhere near 37000 images but I hope it doesn't degrade that badly! 🤓0 -
It seems that Capture One on opening seems to check if the RAW files are still at their location, slow especially if the files are on a network drive. Since all the previews are cached, it is totally unnecessary. The files need only be accessed when developing or for the chromatic aberration analyses. 0
