Thumbnails and Work files are tagged .C1p and .C1w
These reside in the Preview Cache.
.C1p file sizes vary by make of DSLR and will be the ones taking up a lot of room on drive
.C1w file are only about 1K and contain all image adjustment data

If you do a lot of image adjustments you'll need to Archive the .C1w files and then you can delete the Previews. Reload a Session in future and the Previews will rebuild and pull data from .C1w files for all adjustments.
If you purge all of Preview Cache, you'll save space, but not any image adjustments.

    Keith,

Using the Capture One preferences to empty the preview cache deletes the C1P files, but leaves the C1W files behind. Is there any reason to archive the C1W files manually, or is this the software's expected behaviour?

Can the .C1w files be read by the Mac version of C1 if the original .C1w file was produced by the PC version of C1?

    scottbird,

This is how it works, it is the large Previews that take up system resources and not the 1k Work files, so this is what is purged through Preferences.
Remember, when you Delete the active collection, it removes the tab from Sessions but not the folder. Re-select that Session and new Previews are created and they will take on the adjustment data from .C1w files.
if you don't need the image adjustment data, these .C1w files can be deleted as well from the Preview cache from Windows.

Larry, No, these cannot be read by the Mac.
On Mac, there is a folder name ImageSettings which contains image adjustment data files tagged .plist

    Sincerely,
