I assume you run Snow Leopard (a.k.a. 10.6). Have you updated to 10.6.1 already? What network server are you running? Did you have experienced better behavior with Snow Leopard's predecessor (i.e. Leopard)? Just to get a better idea where we are coming from.

    Paul,

I am currently using Snow Leopard 10.6.1. My network server is an HP running Windows Server and Exchange Server, not sure which version, may be Windows Server 2000.

Snow Leopard and the other programs I use such as Photoshop, Light Room, ImagePrint, have no speed issues accessing the network drives.

Seems that C1 is taking a VERY long amount of time to import 500 or so images from a recent shoot. It get about half way through, becomes unresponsive and hangs, crashes. I then have to do a Force Quit.

The previous version of the Mac OS X had no issues with speed and C1.

    Mike,
I suggest you open a support case from Phase One's web site. There has been issues with CO4 opening images from a network share, but they were resolved (you confirmed that there were not issues). You might have ran into a CO4-SnowLeopard-WindowsServer issue. I have not been busy with this yet, so I have to entirely rely on other sources (i.e. users and Phase One).

Again, I encourage users which run into any issues with Snow Leopard (whether or not caused by the new OS X) to report this to Phase One to allow them to investigate further into it.

The network performance of version 4 stinks, has done from day one.
Network performance of v3 is infinitely better.
If you have to use v4 make sure you have as few other apps running as possible, it seems very sensitive to background processes. Running Safari and C14 is as close to a cast iron guarantee of experiencing problems as one can get.
One day Phase will get around to fixing this dog! Roll on version 5!

Please don't distract them from the core business of raw conversions with this talk of asset management 😊 I can't remember exactly which version it was that stopped trashing metadata, but it was only a few months ago. One step at a time

    Robert71,

    Thanks for the info.

I opened a support request and so we will see what happens. As a test, I downloaded a foler with several hundred files to my locak MacPro workstation. Opened C1 and then imported the files. They came in reasonably fast with no issues.

This seems to confirm what you are saying regarding the poor network response.

In this day and age, it just seems inconceivable that a software program of this stature would have network share issues. We no longer live in the isolated PC world, pretty much everything we do is network driven.

    Go figure! 😊
    Thanks

    Mike

On that note I was talking to a training company this afternoon who mentioned that they will be running a course on Capture One 5 mid November. Apparently look and feel will be the same, just some new features. Here's hoping stability, network performance and decent handling of metadata will be among them!

My guess, you are using AFP connection?

AFP is a old dog from Mac OS 9 past...

Native for Mac OS (which is Unix) is NFS
Native for your Windows 2K is SMB

Try to find a common ground, due to the limitation in NFS authentication I would suggest that you use SMB since the Samba implementation in Mac OS is rock solid (despite it lacks DFS support)

So when connecting to server, write SMB://"server ip number"
I am sure you are going to enjoy far better performance.

My network connects are made using SMB, so I don;t think that is where the issue lies.

Further, the crashes, and freezes are pretty frustrating with 4.8.3. Have to reboot MacPro every time it happens or C1 won't even start up. I read others are having this problem as well.

Don't know if have solved the network issues with CP1 😊 , but we having the same issues with a MAC server 10.4. After two days of painful editing in CP1 I reinstalled 4.8.2 and it worked with no issues, no lags, no rotating beach balls. Go figure? Having discussed the issue with the local CP1 rep, he suggested deleting the preference file. So i gave it a go and reinstalled 4.8.3 and it worked beautifully!!!

So what do we learn? A salesman can sometimes say something worthwhile and Capture One development still continues to take one step forward and then two steps back!
