Sony A7 II Profiles - Generic vs Standard
Which one is considered the more "correct" in terms of colour? Which is the "improved" profile?
The reds seem to be the biggest difference, but are there other differences too?
Any chance we could get some more helpful profile naming in the future?
Generic and standard evoke pretty much the same meaning, at least to me.
Or does Standard aim to match the Sony JPEGs, and is Generic tweaked to a different standard (pardon the pun)?
In other cameras the version number seems to denote the "new and improved" profile.
Thanks!

Generic is the description that C1 applies to Base settings developed by Phase using internal testing results.
Some specific cameras across the brands, usually older "Pro" models but with some more recent variations, have additional profiles for different purposes.
For SONY and the special relationship C1 also has access to the Sony internal data from the camera (but not all cameras on a historic basis - some Sony cameras only have the original generic profiles).
The Sony profiles are referred to as STANDARD.
Or at least this is my understanding.
You can use either, or both in separate Variants of an image!
Or indeed any other profile from any camera on the list if you think it offers just what you need.
HTH.

Thanks, Grant. Or indeed any other profile from any camera on the list if you think it offers just what you need.
Yep, works well when you are looking for a specific look.0 -
The Standard profile was added later and is closer to the jpg that comes out of the camera. I tend to use this as my default on my A7II. I think Sony have given the icc profiles for the later cameras to Phase as part of their collaboration. 0 -

I have used the Sony A7r, so not the Sony A7, in CO1 for over a year, and asked Phase one support about the "standard" profile, that was included about a year ago. The answer was that the "standard" profile came about after feedback from users and from Sony. As far as color accuracy is concerned, neither are really neutral, so both will render certain colors inaccurately, but I feel that the "standard" profile is the best as far as accurate colors are concerned. The "generic" profile has a noticeable color shifts with certain colors, e.g. reds that tend to purple: the purple tint is shifted towards a more yellowish red.
The real "issue" however, is not so only the color shifts, but the level of "warm" look that both profiles have. This gave me at least a long struggle with the auto white balance of the Sony A7r, feeling that it was not working properly, but lowering the kelvin level never really solved things. The warm tint is inherent to the profiles. I have been using DxO optics lately with their "neutral colors, neutral tonality" icc profile, and this showed me that it was not the auto white balance, because the warm, yellowish look is not there in DxO. I have pleaded in the past for a more neutral profile to be at least supplied next to the generic Phase one look.
Long story short: you will not get particularily neutral, accurate color rendering with CO1, but the "standard" profile is best.
