How do you handle lens distortions outside C1?
Hi all
I'm looking for a solution to batch-process my images from barrel-distortion.
My lenses are not supported by C1 unfortunately, so I have to find a program that does.
DxO Viewpoint supports my lenses and does it very well, no batch-feature though.
So what kind of solutions do people use?
Which programs, and what kind of workflow do you use?
Do you correct the distortion as a final touch?
Any feedback would be helpful.
Thanks!

I would look at the source if the distortion bothers you, i.e. buy/rent another lens. I you can't, only use this one on subjects where the distortion is not (or hardly) visible. Or, use it on subjects where it is not a problem.
If you can't do all that, you may consider raising a support case to Phase One to support your lens.
If they don't do that, you could look at other software options, so the full-blown DxO converter for example. There are also some open source variants, like RawTherapee, Photivo, Darktable, etc.0 -
This has also been an issue for me, although I can live with single image correction and don't need batch. However I have found one solution to this problem, assuming you own the regular Dxo Optics Pro application.
In Optics Pro:
Step 1 - Create a preset in Optics Pro that does only image distortion correction,
Step 2 - In Dxo select the input files you wish to process (the lenses that C1 does not support),
Step 3 - Create an output recipe (C1 terminology) creating output files in dng format,
Step 4 - Process all of the images that need image correction,
In C1
Step 5 - Create your catalog/session and import the dng files,
Step 6 - Import the other images that C1 does support,
Step 7 - process as normally
This has worked for me although, of course, it creates a large space burden on your system since you will have your original raw images and your new dng images.
I have used this and it did work for me, but I have dropped back down to doing this image by image because of one basic problem. If your images are mixed with some supported by C1 and some not, then processing all of the images through Dxo will correct all of them. Then importing the dng files into C1 will re-correct those that have lens support thus over-correcting some and not some others.
My first thought was to isolate those images that did not have support, process them, then copy the images that did have support into the same folder and import them into C1 (as described above), but this proved too time consuming for me. In addition my non-supported lines are mostly zooms that I use when "birding" so there were actually very few of the large number taken that I actually wanted to process. In the end I went back to doing this one by one. The process does, however, work and if your C1 non-supported lens images are grouped together (rather than scattered around other supported lenses) this process is not too tiresome.0 -
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and workflows.

I found this program to be very useful over the years, have a look:

PTLens is a nice program and they have an app that works well with C1, but it has two problems.
1) It only handles a single image at a time so it is not suitable for batch processing as the OP wants, and
2) I have found that, under certain circumstances, it actually changes the visual look of the image being sent to it. Not the distortion settings, but the color/saturation/lightness settings so the image may come back looking very different from the tiff sent to it. That is the reason I did not buy it and am staying with Dxo ViewPoint 2 (for single image) or Optics Pro (for batch distortion correcting) creating dng file which I then import into C1.0
