    Hi Stuart,
Since the 1Ds MkIII is directly supported for tethered shooting with CO 4.6, you should avoid that the Canon EOS Utility grabs the connection. Do not start EOS Utility when you want to tether with CO 4.6. Note that the "hot folder plus Canon utilities" road was (and still is) a workaround for versions of Capture One that does not (yet) support your Canon dSLR.

Regarding Vista: a 32- and a 64-bit version exist. There is no tether support for the 64-bit version of Vista OS, not with CO and I believe not with EOS Utility so even the hot folder workaround won't help here. You stated that you use the 16-bit version, which is a typo of course, so this is still something to check.

Last but not least, Canon dSLRs with USB only connection (i.e. without firewire) have a communication setting in the camera menu, which basically selects between printing and PC. Should be PC.
