How to copy Hierarchical Keywords

There is, although a bit awkward:

    • import an image you don't care about in the source catalog

    • assign all hierachical keywords to it

    • sync annotations, make sure to have "include hierarchical keywords" checked

    • import the image file into the new catalog

This worked for me in EM2, not sure whether there is a better way now. Exporting andd importing XML did not work when I tried.

    Thanks,

It seems very strange to me, that there isn´t a built in function in Media Pro for this. Feels like the whole software is a bit half-done.

I am thinking of a slightly different approach - but also brute force.
Do a "Save as" on the current catalog V1 to a V2, then remove everything from it. V2 should then have all the same key words as V1 (or so I would think).

Tried the suggestion of adding all hierarchical keywords to a file and importing that file in Media Pro. Keywords show up in the regular keywords list, but not as hierarchical keywords. I did this by importing a EM2 ivc database in Media Pro, assigning all hierarchical keywords to a file, syncing annotations to that file (with XMP export) and then import this file in another, new Media Pro catalog.
In Adobe Bridge the keywords do show up as hierarchical though???

    kind regards, Michel

"This File", is that the image file or the catalog?

The file was an image file (tif) with corresponding xmp file.
Somehow Media pro syncs to an xml file instead of the image file itself, even if you choose the option to sync to the image file.

When I sync from within EM media 2, then the metadata is saved within the image file. Importing this file in a new catalog in Media pro gives flat keywords only. Importing it in a new catalog in EM media 2 gives hierarchical keywords. Maybe this is a bug?

It is a bug and only with the Windows version, I have reported it and I have been assured it will be fixed in the next update.

In the meantime i'm convinced you can import Hierachical Kewords this way:

    1. make a copy from the catalog with all hierarchical keywords
    2. remove all images from this copy catalog
    3. import this catalog in the catalog you wish

    Hi Roelof,

Does not work I'm afraid. Hierarchical keywords do not show up when importing an empty catalogfile with all hierarchical keyword entries I made in EM2. I'll open a support case.

    Kind regards, Michel

    Hi Michel,

The way to do it is ....

1- Open a catalogue in Media Pro that has Hierarchical Keywords already, either a Media Pro one or a EM2 catalogue.

    2-Now do a > File > Save As to a different name.

3- Now empty that new Catalogue of images and do >File > Save As, you now have a empty Catalogue with all your Hierarchical Keywords.

Really PhaseOne should make it that when you sync and also tick sync Hierarchical Keywords that any new catalogue can read them as this is not always the case.

In my work flow all raw files that I have processed are moved from the original catalogue to a second catalogue for processed files BUT the Hierarchical Keywords are not carried across with them! 🙄

    Thanks Paul,

I did it the wrong way round. I imported the empty catalog in my new catalog with images. Importing the new image catalog in the emtpy one with the hierarchical keywords works.

    Kind regards, Michel

So how about to import an existing list of hierarchical keywords (Format: comma-separated Text).

That list I have available and fully functional in iView, EM2 and Media Pro as a file named 'Keywords.txt' located in
    c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Expression Media 2\Plug-ins\Vocabulary\Default
Here an example of its entries:
    seasons
    seasons, fall, autumn
    seasons, fall, autumnal equinox, autumn
    seasons, spring, springtime
    seasons, spring, vernal equinox, springtime
    seasons, summer, summertime
    seasons, summer, summer solstice, summertime
    seasons, winter, wintertime
    seasons, winter, winter solstice, wintertime

This file has currently a size of about 1MB of text only.

Now the really cool thing would be to make that list serve as the base for importing hierarchical keywords.
I will certainly not re-write this list in any of the iVMP derivates the latest version happens to be Media Pro.

And since we are at it, I believe users would love to see an export function as well, so one can efficiently edit its own hierarchical keyword list and then re-import it.

Hope someone has an idea how this import could be accomplished without re-typing the whole bit. After all this is a very typical job computers are designed for in the first place.
