Questions from a lightroom user looking to jump ship
Hi there,
I'm new here. I don't like subscription software, so I'm hoping to jump ship from Lightroom and buy Capture One. I've been working with the trial and have about 10 days left. I've been able to find the answer to many of my questions online, but I had a few questions I was unable to find answers to in my searches - maybe someone here can help:
1. How can I explicitly save metadata to xmp (equivalent of Lightroom's File > Save metadata to file)? I've tried enabling full sync in preferences, but it is painfully slow for me so I'd prefer to leave it off and just write out the metadata to a group of files after I've added keywords, ratings, etc.
2. How can I exclude certain keywords from export? I use a keyword hierarchy and I don't want the top level category keywords to be exported to images. In Lightroom I could easily exclude them but I can't figure out how to do that in Capture One.
Thanks for the help!
John

Welcome!
1. You can manually sync to (and create if it doesn't exist yet) an XMP via the Metadata tool's dropdown menu at the right, and selecting Sync Metadata:

2. This one is a bit more complicated. Presuming all the keywords are hierarchical (grandparent>parent>child), if you'd like to include the any child keyword, you'll have to include the parent. Otherwise, if they're not related, you can break the 'top level' out into a new Keyword Library and then set the process recipe to include only keywords from the specific library not containing the 'top level' one.0 -
Thank you so much! I can't believe I couldn't find the sync metadata option but glad you showed me. The keyword one seems a little cumbersome but I'll play around with your suggestion and see if it's worth it. The other option is to just let the category keywords be exported. They're a little out of place in the final image, but they probably aren't going to hurt anything. 0 -

Actually, this is the case - all my keywords are hierarchical, so I cannot break the categories into their own library. I guess that means I need to export them, which I can live with, if not ideal. I could probably write a script to use something like exiftool to strip the category keywords from the exported images if it's too much of an annoyance. Keyword filtering on export would be a welcome feature (for me) in a future release of C1 though.0 -
The one thing I would caution you about is that Capture One does not support as many cameras as Lightroom. Specifically they do not and likely will never support medium format cameras (other than their own). They also are slow to support some brands. Used to be that way with Leica products. I jumped from Lightroom to C1 but now have to consider jumping back as I'm starting to use medium format. I never thought I would do that but the developing "semi" medium format sized cameras from Hasselblad and Fuji make it more tempting. I imagine that other camera companies might also consider the use of larger sensors.
So, before you jump make sure you never plan to use medium format and are willing to wait a bit longer for support of other new cameras.0
