I must look into it but it seems like a very old problem with quicktime 7.4 and later. Take a quick look here for example:
If i find more info or i remember it, i will post it here.

On the Microsoft forum, Anita Oakly announced on March 28 2008:

    Hi everyone!

The English fix releases for our three top issues in Expression Media 1.0 has been posted, with the rest to follow very soon.

    This update fixes:

Nikon D3 and D300 compressed NEF files crash Expression Media SP1
Custom fields have garbage characters appended to the end of data when opened in Expression Media Service Pack 1
After upgrading to Apple QuickTime 7.4, files/folders added to a Catalog that previously existed are duplicated in the Catalog Folder panel and use 8.3 naming instead of long file names.

The English version for Windows is now available for download at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

The Mac version is available at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

The other languages should be ready within the next 2-3 weeks, with both versions added to the Microsoft update sites for Windows and Mac as soon as they are.

I can hear a sigh of relief from here!

    Regards,
    Anita Oakley

So, the problem was solved long ago but it apears to be reintroduced??
Did you post a support call for this?

    Hola,

Don't know why my former reply didn't show on the thread... Thanks for the link. I have Quicktime 7.7.1 which I installed right before intalling Media Pro 1.2.

Also, not sure if QT is the problem. I import images from a disk, when it finishes I Save the catalog, exit the program. Then start MP again, import another disk, save the catalog, exit the program. One more time... then, everything is fine for a few uses of MP, but at some point, I start MP and suddenly all folder names and file names are truncated to 8 characters.

If and only if, I right click on the drive or a folder and select "Update folder" from the popup menu, then MP recovers the full name for the folders and files, but Keeps the truncated names folders and files, actually duplicating the content.

Since my post, I deleted the catalog, for a 6th time in 15 days. I then started importing again. This means I have to let the PC running all night because, while MP is importing, I cannot do anything on the PC, not even simple browsing, because then MP starts showing a Out of Memory error window, well, many of them. The PC has 16GB of ram. I was able to check and CPU utilization was 90 during MP import. So there is also something very wrong on the import code that is eating all resources.

After another night with the PC left importing another drive, the database reached about 80,000 images. So far, the truncated names problem hasn't show.

But now, If I open MP, click around on some thumbs, not doing actually nothing on them, not even rating or any editing, then I exit and the Crash reporter windows shows more often than before. If I fill a report, click on Send button, sometimes it closes gracefully while at other times it actually makes MP crash! then the Windows' error windows shows saying the program crashed and it's looking for a solution, which of course doesn't find 😊

Tonight I'm going to let MP importing the remaining drive, which should take the database to 117,000+ images. And see if the truncated names problem reappears. Again, can't import files during the day because if I use the PC then MP starts crashing with out of memory errors.

There are so many bugs on this software that I haven't even been able to start using it!

Forgot to add, my NEF image files are from Nikon D70, D70s, D200 and D700 cameras. And I've never shot with Compressed NEF modes (that I remember... always using uncompressed raw). The link you posted seems to apply only to compressed nef from D300 and D3 bodies.

Also, I'm using Phase One Media Pro 1.2, so I don't think I could use the Expression Media rollup from Microsoft, right?

    Muchas gracias,

I have had this happen before but it has usually been because the catalogues are too big and become corrupted, so I have reduced the catalogue sizes. Then it has been okay.

Also, I'm using Phase One Media Pro 1.2, so I don't think I could use the Expression Media rollup from Microsoft, right?

As it seems Microsoft solved this issue long time ago so the code responsible for that must be part of the present code of MP (as being the direct successor of EM). I'm almost sure that it is not possible to perform an update with the EM rollup from Microsoft on MP but as i interpret it's not necessary either.

In my opinion there are two scenario's:

1.) In the latest version of MP the code preventing this issue is undone and more people should suffer from it. In that case PhaseOne must repair it.
2.) It's a problem specific to your situation only. I don't know if PhaseOne can/will help out

In both cases i would post a support call for it..

Well, I think I've found why Media Pro truncates folder names and file names to 8 characters...

I created two catalogs, for one I configured Thumbnail siez to 320px and Quality Medium. For the other, I configured Thumbnail size to 640px and Quality High. I'm not creating full-screeen previews at any size, but using the option to prefer embedded previews. Both catalogs contain 117421 images.

However, the first catalog with smaller thumbnails reaches a Catalog Size of 1.6GB, while the second catalog with larger thumbnail reaches a Catalog Size of 14.9GB.

And, it is the second catalog that works OK the first time, but if I close the application and later re-open, now all folder names and file names are truncated to 8 characters.

I created a third catalog with thumbnail size 640px and Quality Medium, and the Catalog Size reaches 4.1GB. This catalog size also truncates folder names and files names, and this is the configuration I was using when I first detected the problem.

So, it is my conclusion that Media Pro truncates folder names and files names to 8-characters when the Catalog Size exceeds 4GB... So much for "it is no longer restricted to 128000 files per catalog and catalog sizes of 4GB" ☹️

    You may be right.
I just added a few hundred files to a catalog that was just fine. It now reads cat size 4G.
I saved it, closed it properly, then closed MP.
I just reopened the catalog - and now the file names are all messed up. In addition, it seems to have lost the ratings.
    UGH !!

I just filed a support case.

I just split the larger catalog into 2 roughly parts.
Not what I want, or was promised, but at least they are stable.
