How to set default helper application?
I know how to add helper applications to the list, but how do I select one to be the default application for a certain file type?

I think the default application is the application that is set in Windows as the default application for that particular file type like described here:
Is this what you meant?
Not really. Under the Action menu or by right clicking on an image, one is give the option of opening that image in any of a number of Helper applications. I know how to edit the list of Helper applications but not how to set one of them as the default for a particular type of file. For example, I might want all JPEGs and TIFFs by default to open in CS5 and all raw files to open in C1. Is this not under the user's control?

Ok, i assumed you wanted to assign an application to the 'Default Application' option in the menu:

I do not know how to do what you want, sorry.

I think the Default Application is set at the OS level. For example, on a Macintosh, I can select one NEF file in a finder window, then perform File > Get Info; the file info window includes the option "Open with: [application menu]." I can select "Nikon Capture NX2" from the menu. I can then choose to apply this selection to all NEFs by clicking the Change All button. Then, in Expression Media (or Media Pro), whenever I option-click a NEF, it will open in Nikon Capture NX2.
Is there an equivalent method for Windows?0 -
Is there an equivalent method for Windows?
Yes, I linked to a description in the first reply in this thread.
But it's not what Rob meant, he said.
I agree with you, when you fix the default application for a certain filetyp on OS level, it should work in MP/EM also..
I can not imaging a situation when you want another default application for TIF files when you are working in MP and another default application when you are working on OS level.
So, my first suggestion is not so bad at all 😊

Sorry, Roelof, I saw your original reply a few days ago, but completely forgot about it. I'm still not sure why Rob didn't think your first reply was relevant. It precisely answers the question, "How do I set the default application?"
Rob, please read Roelof's answer again. You can't set the default application within Media Pro/Expression Media. You must set it at the OS level. "Default application" in Media Pro/Expression Media refers to this OS setting. If the Windows method works like my Macintosh method, then you can use this technique to set all your JPEGs and TIFFs to open in Photoshop and all your raw files to open in C1. Please advise if we are not understanding your question.0 -
Sorry for being so dense. Thanks, guys.

Don't worry. I was stumped by the same problem myself and couldn't figure it out until the proverbial "light bulb" went on in my head.0
