Switching from MAC to Pc
Yes folks.. I've been a looong time mac user.. never thought this day would come.. been a Mac user for over 20 years now.
Using IQ180 and few Canon Cameras.
Mac Problems:
• Mac Pro is outdated with no clear future.
• iMacs cant really handle our workflow / not really very upgradable.
• Limited choice of affordable and powerful GPUs.
• Underpowered Firewire ports.
So we also have a few PC machines in our office we use for CGI. Finally thought we would give that a try to see how C1 did on a PC. EVERYTHING was snappier.. the previews, zooms, processing. and this wasnt even a very high end PC
PC Config:
• Overclocked i7 3930K to 4.5Ghz (liquid cooled) this was one of our render nodes.
• SSD
• GTX 480
• Windows 7
• unsure of RAM.. but i think should be about 16GB
Our dual xeon mac pro.. yes.. thought outdated.. still is a robust machine.
processing a single image of the IQ180 took about 19 seconds.
The same image on the PC processed under 5 seconds.
We always have issues with shooting tethered on a Mac.
Going to try tethered shooting on a PC and will post results soon.
Moving to a PC somehow still doesnt feel right will come with a slight learning curve.. but i think there isnt much choice. ☹️

The web's best forecasters, rumor-spinners, conspiracy theorists, etc all pretty much have the new tower launching this year. The question of when still seems to be somewhat up in the air but from my observations it should be a huge step forward. When I look at the new rash of higher end video cards coming on to the market specifically for Mac Pro it makes me wonder if the release isn't going to be sooner than later.

I agree. I guess we just got tired of waiting. It could launch in June or November. Or any other month of the year.
But we are shooting back to back. Its tiring to be having to handle hardware issues.
Also constantly being embarrassed in front of the client and its now actually become commonplace having to shout out to the models " give us a minute here. Technical difficulty "
Well got my fingers crossed. And i know for sure that as and when the new mac pros come out (if) im gonna order mine the same day.
But until then.. The PC isnt so bad.0
