243,000+ RAW files in a catalog?

I've got a Lightroom catalog with about 243,000 files, mostly RAWs from Canon 5d2/5d3 and some coming from a 5DSR now. The files and catalog all reside on a 28TB 7200rpm 8-bay RAID tower with Thunderbolt 2. There's about 20TB of free space currently. My main computer is a Macbook Pro Retina 15" with 16GB of RAM and a 756GB SSD with about 300GB free.

My current workflow is to shoot into C1 Sessions, edit, process to JPG/TIFF for clients, then import into LR catalog after job completion. I use LR for keyword and metadata input as it is much easier than C1. I also use LR for making portfolio edits (in Collections) across my archive for syndication and promos. Can C1 catalogs replace LR for me in this scenario? Will C1 have any performance problems with so many images? Is there a limit to how many images I can manage in C1 Catalogs?

  How well do you find the interface between COP and Media Pro works?
  
  I had a much smaller number of images, about 17,000, and found that importing them in batches of 3000-5000 worked very well on a 2009 iMac.
  
  BTW I think you meant that your MacPro has 2 quad-core Xenon 3.0GHz processors?
  
  If you select the "all Images" folder in the "Catalog Collections" section of the COP Library tool, how long does it take for COP to get over it's hang and respond to the mouse (scrolling for example)?
  
  (For my 2009 iMac with a 2.6GHz quad core i5 its about 70 seconds for a catalog with 17000 referenced images). About the same for my 2012 MacMini with 2.6GHz quad Core i7.
  
  I think this delay depends on the size of the catalog and certain capabilities of the Mac, I'm trying to assess which ones.

  I work them as two different units. I use MediaPro like Adobe Bridge or LR so I can browse there and then work on it using COP using the OpenWith functionality.
  It is useful for search for images from a past shoot either by type of image, date, client or location.
  
  I still dont understand MP fully as I dont know if it needs to know the RAW file type to catalog it. I guess so, in which case, it is like LR in that respect. It means that MP needs to be updated with data about the RAW file type of new cameras. IMHO what is required is for the program to view the thumbnail and catalog it as an 'unknown RAW file type' if it doesnt know how to interpret the RAW format.
  
  
  Importing 5000 images into a COP catalog take about 5-10mins for the initial preview import then for the real import into the database then this takes anything from 5-25 minutes depending on the file size. COP seems very slow if you feed it with large TIFF files.
  
  Yes my MacPro has twin 3Ghz Xeons.
  I dont find increasing the RAM past 16GB has much effect unless I do a multi (50-60 layers) layered Photoshop file that is very large to start with. I only do these type of edits once or twice a year. I just have to be patient!
