Why all the manual syncing?

    Hello Nice Tri,

What do you mean by manual syncing ? You can turn on automatic update of a folder. This synchronises data, files and metadata, from the disk to the catalog. The automatic sync in the opposite way is dangerous on my opinion and I do not want it to be automatic. And Lightroom does not do it "alone" (or ?). However, I agree that it can be nice to have this option to keep files "in-sync" only if I want. Or maybe at least an icon telling us that the datas are not sync.

Or may be I do not understand you well.

About Lightroom, I use it since the first release and, now, I only return to it only for exporting into jpeg, or to my website with plugins, because I find easier to manage my job with MP1, and the interaction with C1 and "catalog sets" is very nice, making me spare a lot of time.

This just makes no sense to me.

I want to separate image files that I might publish to the web and cataloguing metadata from each other. Metadata that I collect is (at least partially) private, and having it in the catalogue only is a safety net. What never reaches the image files can't be forgotten to remove before publishing.

Other reason I want it separate: I don't want any software touch the original image files, in order to avoid any corruption by bugs.

    So it's a feature, not a limitation.

To me, the issue is between working in Media Pro, and then going into Capture One. If I spend a good deal of time ranking photos in Media Pro, then I'd like to be able to use those rankings in Capture One. If I have both of them open at the same time, going back and forth to select images for editing in Media Pro, I'd like to have those ranks immediately visible in Capture One. In contrast, it seems that Capture One not only ignores Media Pro rankings, it will null them out. I assume that the Capture One s/w team has more pull inside Phase One's internal world; but I for one am not impressed. Perhaps I'm missing something, but this doesn't strike me as effective integration of the two products for a functional workflow. Likewise, if I go and do edits to images in Capture One, I then have to go back to Media Pro and tell it to rebuild the images. This seems to be the case even with folder sync turned on. That's likely because Capture One isn't sending any specific pipeline signals back to Media Pro as to what it's been doing, and vice versa. There simply running on their own independent clocks. If you have 30k images in a catalog, it's going to take a while to get around to that one image that's just been touched.

I can see the potential merits of not exporting images to a client with ranking turned on, for example. That should be an output function. It should not make me dance around in my workflow just because I might not want to let someone else see my rankings at some point in the future.

Personally, I want my catalog and images to be 100% sync'd... and want it all done automatically all the time. I like jumping from software to software... taking along all my hard work with me without having to hope for compatibility between the programs.

If another program comes along that offers better functionality or a fancy new feature - all I need to do is import my existing ITPC and XMP into the software and voila... rankings, ratings, keywords, etc are all available without any add'l work. Also, if I take those images and upload them to a 3rd party site, all the info goes along as well.

Image corruption is so remote that its not worth the bother to worry about... besides, the images are all backed up in multiple places (and multiple ways) so no worries if that .001% error occurs - just grab a backup and work again.

Anyway.. those are my reasons... what the reasons (besides corruption) that we shouldn't keep these all in sync?
