Whenever I select Grid Guides I only ever get a vertical blue grid guide; how do I get a horizintal one as well?

  Then you want the View menu and there is a section about 1/3rd of the way down with 4 options for Grids and Guides.

  I should also have mentioned that there is a default shortcut key for hiding/displaying the chosen guide(s) and you can if you wish define shortcuts for adding, locking, etc.
