Attaching Camera Freezes Canon
Hello,
I have Capture One 8.1.1 on Yosemite 10.10.2. I'm not sure when it started happening, but I've had issues connecting to Canon cameras. It has been with 2 different computers, and several different canons, a 5DMKIII and a 1DX. I tried updating everything. Restarting. And uninstalling and reinstalling. When I plug any of the cameras in, they just open the spinning wheel on top of Capture and the dialog comes up with attaching camera. Which it sits at indefinitely.
I ended up installing the Canon Utility for capturing. Which can connect with the cameras, but the interface is terrible. So I'd much rather work with Capture.
After I installed the Canon software, when plugging in a camera, the canon software attaches first, and leaves capture one hanging. I force quit both Canon software and Capture One, and after I restart Capture, it will finally connect.
I've gone through 5 different cables, and 2 separate computers, and like I said 2 different cameras. Something is not communicating between Canon and Capture.
My digital tech friend seems to be getting the same issue with his jobs as well.

Hello,
it works fine here. You could issue a support request to PhaseOne.

Hi!
Here's what I do with 1DX:
+ set camera 'auto power off' to 'disable'
+ disable the computer's sleep function
+ connect the camera
+ start CO
Works fine.
CO hangs when connecting the camera to the running software. I have a support case about it. Please create one, too. The more information for PO, the better. Hope they find a solution for the future,

Same problem here....
I need to have the camera powered up. Half-press the shutter, then start CaptureOne and keep fingers crossed that it will work.
Canon 5D Mark III
Yosemite 10.10.2
Capture One 8.1.1
Different Cables, etc.
Some days it works after one or two restarts of capture one, other days it drops out all the time.
Same issue with the Camera Connection Window and then it crashes... using lightroom is way too slow to keep everything in the flow - i need this fixed.
I'll open a case aswell!
Thanks Mark0 -
The other day I helped a Canon tethered shooter by setting the Preferences > Capture > Providers. Disable all except what you need. 0 -
Even with only Canon selected, it only works for me if I maintain the sequence I described above. And I tested several cables, active and passive, hubs, and so on. + set camera 'auto power off' to 'disable'
+ disable the computer's sleep function
+ connect the camera
+ start CO
I should mention that Image Capture is set to 'No Application', too.
Waking up or attaching the 1DX to a running CO doesn't work here. 1Dm3 seems to be less problematic. It sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. But it doesn't care for crossed fingers. 😉
My sequence and setting works rock solid. I never see any problem, freeze or crash. And the batteries allow several hours of shooting, nevertheless. Not perfect, but it works nicely for me.
MBP 5,2 and MBPr 11,3
CO Pro 8.1.1
Yosemite 10.10.2
Canon 1Dm3 and 1DX

I have the same issue with CO 8.2.0.82, 5D MKIII with latest 1.3.3 firmware, and Yosemite 10.10.2
No matter what combination I attach the camera/start CO in, CO will give me a progress window of "Attaching Camera", and will hang indefinitely. I've tried new cables, reinstalling, updating software/firmware. Nothing seems to fix the issue.
Rarely, the camera will connect and work. However, upon going to sleep/restarting CO/disconnecting camera, when I try to reconnect, it hangs again.
This is incredibly frustrating. CO was recommended to me by another professional colleague and I have found it to be much better than Lightroom; I am quite impressed by what it offers. However, what I'm not impressed with is that these issues make working at a steady pace impossible, and therefore the software as it sits is certainly not worth $299.
I've read some articles that say that the issue has to do with yosemite, and that users should downgrade to mavericks to fix any bugs. However, I will not work backwards and reinstall an older/less secure/slower performance OS version just to make one piece of software work. A top-of-the-line software should in turn come with top-of-the-line support that rectifies the bugs.
I'd rather stick with a product that has less features but actually works like Lightroom, rather than one that has more but is unusable.0 -
Have you created a Support Case with the Capture One support team?
I'm sure they would appreciate being able to investigate your problem.
Meanwhile might it be possible (as can happen with Windows machines) that C1 has popped up a window waiting for a response but that is not displaying over the top of pre-existing windows? Is that likely with a Mac?
Also, have you tried the connection with no memory cards in the camera? ( Is the Mac also seeing the camera as a mass storage device?)
What you describe sounds to me like the Canon software has auto associated with the camera (as you might expect) and therefore grabs control rather than allowing the Canon SDK (called from Capture One) to take charge. Disabling the Canon software auto select via your OS would be something worth trying I would guess. (I say guess as I am now a Mac user - but the same sort of thing can happen using Windows.)0 -
I'm having the same problem, glad to see that there are a few more people.
My system, MBP with Mavericks 10.9, Canon 5d MkIII, C1pro, 8.xx
I've been shooting with capture one 8 since it was new. It's been quick and easy to tether MkIII since they solved initial issues in Capture 7. All of a sudden there is a bug, that is effecting all versions of C1 8. 8.0, 8.1. & 8.2.
For me this glitch happens if I disconnect my Mkiii or turn it off while its tethered. If the connection is broken, capture on crashes, and will not reconnect. If I trash the preferences files in the Library, then restart C1 Pro, it reconnects.
Breaking the connection causes the same issue again.
Capture 7 still works smoothly, and up until about a week ago capture 8 was smooth too. Is there some security update from apple causing a malfunction? Sounds crazy, but I haven't seen a tether problem that I wan't able to work around.... Until now.0 -
OK, I successfully solved my issue, the user above mentioned setting the providers to Canon only: Preferences > Capture > Providers But, intact the only one that was causing a conflict for me was the Sony.
It's beneficial to keep the others turned on, as I sometimes use nikon, and Phase backs pretty often.
Hopefully this works for you.0
