Opening C1 8 catalogue in C1 7.
there could very well be a simple answer to this.
I currently have version 7, and recently tested out version 8 during it's trial time, in the belief that once the trial ended I can open the catalogue in version 7 and continue working, until I'm ready to upgrade and purchase 8.
So version 8 catalogues won't open in 7. Is there a way around it? Or is it a simple answer of no, only way to open the catalogue is to purchase 8?

Try to find your backed up C1 7 catalogs.
You may be able to load one of those in C1 7.
If not, contact support, I'm sure they can get you squared away.0 -
Like most programs like this, once move on to a newer version you cannot go back to older version.
You might be saved, if you do an "show package contents" on the catalog, you can go into the package. When I went from 7 to 8, I believe that it saved the catalogdb file at that point (.backup). You might be able to just rename it back and get back to version 7.
OR
Restore from a previous save of the catalog if you did that before going to v8.
Now, all your edits/additions will not be there, that were done in v8.
I also found that v8.1 must of updated the catalogdb file, as I see a new .backup file created yesterday after the update, so once you go to that v8.1 again no going back, with any changes.
