Sessions and catalogues for my workflow
Hi,
Just moving over to C1 for my raw processing.
Just trying to get my head around the organisation of shoots using sessions or catalogues.
I shoot mainly interiors / architectural for multiple clients with multiple separate shoots for each client.
Currently I have a work folder on my mac with current jobs on it, with client folder within and shoot folders within each client folder. Each shoot folder is broken down into raw, working and tiff folders (and then also separate jpeg folders (high res / screen res) where necessary) so similar to the session structure of capture, selects and output.
Then there are archived jobs from beyond current 2 months on a external disk.
So going forwards using C1 as my raw processor, would most efficient method be to have new session for each shoot…ending up with very long list of sessions in drop down menu or to to use catalogues based on my folder structure which would end up being quite large?
Thanks,
Marc

Your workflow is like mine and I too, have been struggling with CO7 catalogue/sessions/folders etc etc. and its data management system these last 3 months. I have tried a variety of approaches and workflow and have been frustrated by 2 things:
- The organizational framework offered in CO7 has flexibility (overwhelmingly so) but the learning curve is long, hard and the returns on time invested in learning it may not be worth the effort. It may be for photographers who have an extensive client list and diversity of services but not for me a one person effort - I would rather spend my time editing rather than being a librarian. My work has shelf life and I have rarely had to search out my archives except for the odd image a client has lost.
- The tutorials offered by CO7 and others are a good start, are dry, dense-packed, but do not take into account the many single person photographers like me moving from NIK, NX2, DxO PS6 etc. They have not laid down strong concepts and principles of this data organization simply and effectively for beginners. I have used computers since 1982 (DOS, programmed in UNIX, Xenix, used SQL software, have migrated from PC to Apple 2 years ago) but CO7 has made me feel stupid.
You may want to do what I did and spend 3 months finding all of this out or do what will do - keep my existing data system but open CO7 in sessions only. My intention is to use my Mac at the office and MacBook on the road and simply sync the two at the end of the day.
I would be interested in hearing others who have never used Capture One, but now dave made CO7 their primary editing software and their journeys to date. I am willing to try again, perhaps hearing of other workflows.
Lastly, CO7 engine is excellent and am glad I moved over.

Thanks.
Yes looking at C1 purely from raw processing point of view sessions seems the better option.
Like you I do not need to endlessly search a catalogue for images by keywords etc…can easily do search by folder basis.
This does of course still lead to need for a DAM programme.
I'd like to use media pro as I like its interface and its 'connectivity' to C1 but not sure it's future is particularly bright with advent of catalogues in C1, no mavericks support etc...
Could continue to use LR just as DAM software alone alongside C1 for processing (LR was old process and dam software for me).
Catalogues in C1 seem to be similar to LR way of working but of course if going this way it seems to make sense to use it fully so to catalogue all my commercial work would take days just to import…and not sure how well C1 will cope with such a large catalogue…do not want too slow it down in regards to processing etc.
It seems you can send a session into a catalogue so for now perhaps best to work with sessions on C1 for new work, keeping LR for catalogue (DAM) purposes.
As a session is similar to my working structure anyway (3 folders) I can always then convert existing C1 sessions to a catalogue and add archive to it in future.
This also means for now I can just get on with working with new processing software and worry about whole new cataloguing system at a later date…once media pro / C1 catalogues are all sorted out.

Yes let's wait -CO7 is still in its 'rollout' stage and it will take time and user use to provide constructive feedback for each of us to find our way. In the meantime I have work to do....😊 0 -
New to CO7 pro & struggling with catalogs & sessions.
I have an orderly hierarchal folder system indexed with my own database program & do not rely on LR or Bridge to find files
Like others in the forum I have struggled with catalogs etc but really like C1 processing
How can I delete my test catalogs & sessions without losing files from disc & start again.
I am an enthusiastic amateur in retirement & travel extensively so need PS to deal with power lines and helicopter blades.
All I want to do is open individual or small groups of images in C1, process and save to disc with changes for further attention in PS if necessary0 -

It sounds like you will best served by using sessions. I do. However I don't use PS or, 99.99% of the time, any similar tool.
However I do use another RAW file editor which, since it too does not employ a catalogue, allows me to run both applications side by side. Fortunately its overall approach to processing is very similar to C1.
As for any files in your test catalogues - did you set up the catalogue to import the source files or leave them in their original location. If you left them REFERENCED the files will be wherever you put them but is you bin the catalogue the edits will be . This may or may not be important to you. There are ways to retrieve the edits before binning the catalogue if you need to.
If you imported the source files to the catalogue then you need to export them to a location of your choosing before you delete the catalogue.
If you have used sessions the source files should be somewhere in the folder structure on your machine. To eliminate a whole test session, should you feel the need, would mainly be a matter of deleting the COsession database file and, the edit and preview files. That should be easy enough. I'm a Windows users rather than Mac so the mechanics of the process I will leave for others to advise in case there are operating system specifics that one needs to be aware of.
HTH.
