move project between catalogs
From an Aperture import I have a big catalog, containing a Folders -> Projects -> Albums structure.
When I select one folder ant click "save as catalog" the catalog structure is being generated, the operation thereafter takes VERY long time, which I don't quite understand since (hopefully) the underlying directory structure isn't changed, but only the references to the files and structure.
Anyway.
How can I move a project of one catalog to another catalog?

How long is very long? How many images? Does COP become nonresponsive? (beach ball?). What kind of drive is used to store the Catalog and the images?
Another approach is to simply duplicate the the catalog file, rename it. The upon opening the new catalog, remove all the files you don't want from the catalog. Careful to not delete the original files.
I sometimes experience very slow operation, I have had support tell me that it could possibly be linked to my use of TIFF files and in another conversation recently on this forum it was mentioned this might be linked to my use of CR2 files. I have tried removing TIFF files but that has not helped.
Perhaps check in the file browser secrion that there ano warnings of problems with the file structure.
Perhaps also use activity monitor to see how much processsor load is being used by COP, how much memory is being used and if there is a lot of disk traffic. If COP is not limited by these resources then some very inefficent code is acting.
Support suggested that I try disabling OpenCL to see if that helps (it didn't - makes no difference for me). But try.
At the suggestion of the support people I configured an external SSD, putting COP catalogs and all images on this drive does result in a general speedup but did not affect the problem below.
When my COP is very slow, I find that I can speed things up immensely by making the Filters tool not visible (active). COP support are unable to identify or fix the problem. My workaround is to remove the the FILTERs tool from the Library Tool tab; I make a new custom tool tab and there I put the Filters tool tto be activated only if needed. I don't know if this affects you or not.
Probabaly a good idea to raise a support ticket.0 -
Ok, thanks, the idea with copying the catalog and delete all stuff I don't want ist fair enough.
But what if I already have two catalogs and decide that the location for a given project is not reasonable any more, therefore I want to move it from one catalog to the other.
Is that possible?0 -

Strategy one is export the project to be moved from the original catalog into a temp catalog, then import the temp into the receiving catalog (assuming a small project)
Strategy two is to export the project using the copy file - delete variants method in my posting, then import the temp catalog into the receiving catalog.
Alternatively, if the exported project is hugely bigger than the receiving catalog, consider importing the receiving catalog into the temp catalog, and name it receiving2.cocatalog.0
