I do not want to save, only manipulate
Given that I am not interested in batch processing, can I generate variants and output the results directly into Photoshop using the "Open with" feature of Capture One from a single shot without also having to save each of them as TIFs (or JPEGs) in the session folders at the same time or find and delete them afterwards?
I do not want these TIFs. All I want to do is generate these variants and immediately go into Photoshop and use them there recombining them selectively so that I can get the best out a very high dynamic range image where one variant is inadequate to do the job.
(An example is a landscape in brilliant sunshine with a blue sky and beautiful clouds with lots of detail in them. Having shot at an exposure of -2 stops to preserve the cloud detail, I needed two variants, one for the sky and another for the landcape itself where I first used Capture One to restore the -2 as much as possible. (It works far better than film, by the way!)

Short answer: no. Capture One outputs to a image file (typically TIFF or JPEG) and has the additional option to automatically open it in another application (typically Photoshop or something) 0 -
Thanks for that. If I get the benefit out of using Capture One, I can live with looking for and deleting unwanted TIFs afterwards. 0 -
You should know that my version allows you to always place develops into the same folder...so you could create a process and name it something like "Don't Keep" that would always place those developed files in a specific folder for handy deletion.
It would not be a great idea to hold files in RAM memory...and the idea that the program would automatically erase any files from disk (as in PS's TEMP files) would make me uncomfortable aslo....so I don't think this is a feature many would request....
if process recipes are a part of your version, that would be the most efficient and safe method IMHO....0 -
Thanks again for that. You appear to be saying all kinds of things which might make sense if only I had the time and inclination to mess around for as long as it takes actually learning precisely what Capture One does and you are talking about. That would be fair enough except that, as you say here and elsewhere to my other two forum queries:
1) There is no single workflow that fits the product or Phase One is going to explain properly.
2) There is no manual that explains terms that to some like me might not be self-evident like process recipes and sessions and fully what they do, what you can do with them and what you must not do.
3) I have to rely upon a few scant videos and this forum when, if trial and error does not suffice for me, there is no viable and comprehensive alternative like a proper manual. There is nothing wrong with trial error and I use it a lot but it is no good when it is the only alternative.
4) If I ask a question about one thing I appear to be liable to a reply that merely begs new questions, in this instance "What are recipes and how do I use them to my ends?"
5) Sorry mate (to use the British vernacular) I'd rather a stable product that I can get one version of and not provide the software supplier with a steady additional income for because each upgrade is partly a cover to hide shortcomings in an earlier version. Even when upgrades are free, they often create additional effort for the user, unless they are mostly bug fixes and little more.
Real upgrades are as much a chore as an opportunity. Actually, I am not looking for more progress daily. Just give me the tools in a stable product that works and I will use them today, tomorrow and the next day mostly the same way once I have met my key objectives.
5) So I'd rather good documentation of a stable product that changes every three years or less from you or somebody else instead of a moving target or the ploy of criticising how I express one of my queries (even if justified) instead of answering anything there in a meaningful way.
So in summary, thanks for your replies. Collectively, they do little to answer my three separate forum questions but they tell me all I need to know about Capture One. It is not for me, especially if this is the kind of support I can expect in the absence of quality documentation.
Trial and error, the onus on the customer? I managed fine learning quite a huge amount about Photoshop CS2 in precisely that way, though I did buy a good reference manual on it from a third party in the absence of one from Adobe and referred to it occasionally when I got into trouble. Agreed, it mostly sits there but at least I can refer to it when I need to. If not Adobe then Martin Evening. It is all the same to me.
Why not the equivalent with Capture One? You have answered that question. I think I will call it a day unless you or one of your colleagues is able to convince me that much of what you have said is entirely unreasonable. Thank you and almost certainly a permanent goodbye.
We live in an age of tremendous technological change but much of it is unorderly because of complacency or opportunism to make a fast buck and also to get additional payment for filling in the holes afterwards. Is there anything more valuable to know about Capture One than the extent of the risk of just this?
Read this as if in italics -That was a rhetorical question.0 -
Simply stated...if you are on the Pro version, the options for process recipes is on Page 105 of the manual. It;s the top paragraph if you are using the current version. That would be the most efficient answer to your initial question.
I'll refrain from answering further if you are in rhetorical mode....the words/topics I uased in my reply are quite clearly listed in the table of contents, easily acessed from the HELP menu. I wasn't being obtuse...I'm just not sure which version you're using... and the feature I suggested is not available in the standard version.0
