    Philip,
    Applying Metadata from one image to another is best done through a Style.
    I would suggest you use the "Default with Styles" when shooting tethered and have the Style you choose reflect the Metadata you wish to apply.

    thanks for your prompt reply, however your suggestion means any corrections I've made to exposure etc and are lost if I use the the default with style tab.

    If you like to automatically apply adjustments like white balance or exposure and metadata during capture, apply the metadata (preferably from a style = less work) to the current image along with other adjustments. Next, select Copy from Last as next capture adjustment.
