Which version to acquire
How often does C1 come out as a new version?
I ask as the price for C1 12 perpetual is $299. The price for a 1 year, prepaid subscription is $199.
If a new version comes out every more often than every 18 months, then does it not make more sense to buy the subscription? Escpecially if I would always want to buy the newest version as it comes out.
Does the subscription include upgrades, as of now to v13?
Thanks.

If you buy the software instead of using the subscription model, then when the next version comes out you will only have to pay for an upgrade, full price. Historically, new versions come out about once a year.

Thanks.
What % of the new price do they typically charge from upgrade?0 -
This time round, the new price in dollars was $299 and the upgrade price from the immediately previous version was $149. (More if you skipped a version so that you were updating from say 10 to 12, not 11 to 12.)

The software-only upgrade from v11 to v12 is $211 CAD. To someone that isn't yet using the software and therefore has not yet experienced the amazing capabilities of Capture One Pro, I feel the cost of the software is almost shockingly high. With $211, I would easily be able to buy good quality software (photo-related or not), but with Capture One Pro, I only get an upgrade. It seems to me that we need to buy this upgrade because they promise performance improvements - the one aspect that's discouraging me to migrate from Apple Aperture to Capture One Pro.
Many people buy Capture One Pro because they dislike the Adobe subscription model, but Phase One also has a subscription model - does this tend to be cheaper if you plan on using the software for years to come?0 -
C1 Pro has been launching updates nearly to the day once a year for a bunch of years now. I think paying a subscription is not worth it. Buy the software and then do upgrades or just every other upgrade.
I have been with C1 since version 8. I love the quality of the files. I was an Apple Aperture convert. I still miss that program's simple interface. C1 is pretty good but there are so many more feature to learn. I tried Lightroom and felt the interface was too confusing and non-intuitive.
Price is subjective. On one hand it seems expensive but for a hobby I enjoy it is a small price compared to what I used to pay for film and processing. There are some lower priced programs that have good RAW file processing and are just now adding DAM features. They look promising but I am sticking with C1. Migrating from Aperture to C1 was not too bad but little things had to be tweaked.0 -
Thanks everyone.
I'm still a little confused. If I purchase C1 it costs $299 for the first year and then around $200+ every subsequent year. If I buy the subscription it cost $199 a year. If I plan to upgrade each time a new version appears, I'm better of with the subscription, especially in the first year. The only difference is that I decide not to continue upgrading, I still own v12 forever, and if I have a subscription, I have nothing after the first year.
Am I missing something here?0 -
