Blackout or whiteout the background

Using CaptureOne Pro 9.3, I want to completely Blackout or whiteout the background of a portrait, keeping the subject intact, but blacking (or whiting) out the entire background. Can anyone tell me how to do that? Thank you

  I think that is a task better done with something like Photoshop or Affinity photo. It's not really the sort of thing that C1 is designed to do.

  go to the local adjustments tab, make a new layer - throw the exposure up or down depending on which you want (black or white background)
  start brushing.. you can use the auto mask to help when it comes to the edge of your subject.
