In the Base Characteristics tool, when you click the ..., there is an option saying Save as Defaults for [your camera model]. I wonder what happens if you set Extra shadow and then save that as the default for your camera?

all new files imported will have the shadow settings applied for that camera model

Yes, and he wants that anyway. But I wonder what effect it has on creating a new variant.

When creating a new variant it resets the tone curve for the variant back to auto. I always import with the tone curve set to extra shadow. Is there a way to force it to use the tone curve of the original when making a new variant?

    Cheers.

What would you foresee as the problem with cloning a variant and starting from there?

Alternatively consider whether to leave things as "Auto" and create a style that does the "Extra Shadow" stuff, applying that at import.

Personally I always start with Linear and go from there. The provided generic "Film Simulation" curves are fine for what they are but not necessarily the only answer in all situations.

new variant will be the base of the old file - so saved defaults will be applied

That seems to provide the solution to the OP's problem, then.

Thanks for taking the time to answer guys. I have it sorted.
I was being thick. I previously had extra shadow as defaults for my camera. Last week I built a new PC and just forgot to set the defaults again on re-installing Capture One. So it was using the default defaults for variant creation.

    Cheers. Scott.
