I'm having some difficulty understanding the sliders at the top of the levels tool. The bottom sliders appear to work in a similar manner to the Levels tool in Photoshop, but I cannot see exactly how the top sliders work.

These top sliders set custom values fot target shadows or highlights, which you then map to points in your image with the respective eye-dropper tool. There is an explanation on page 43 of the user guide.

While this tool can give quite precise control, I have found it easier so far to work with the visual warnings of shadows and highlights, which allow you to monitor the combined effect of whatever different adjustments you have set.

    Hope this helps.

Indeed it does and I'm grateful for your quick response.

So, if I've decided that my shadow level should be 7, since that's where my printer prints the slightest textured level in the shadows, I set the top left slider to 7, choose the shadow eyedropper and select a suitable point in the image. Correct?

Well, it does move the histogram, but the area selected does not then read 7, or anywhere near that number. I think I need to spend some more time with this tool

I think I agree with your suggestion of checking the visual warnings and the overall look of the image.

Many thanks for your help - it's appreciated.
