C1 V5 Pro - Color Editor / Smart Saturation
Anyone here using the Color Editor in C1 to increase saturation of camera profiles to access certain printable colors?
Or to create camera profiles?
I have a serious issue with the newly introduced "smart saturation" in the Color Editor.
In V4 (and V3) when you increase the global saturation in the Color Editor the entire profile extends symmetrically - which is logical.
So the profile keeps the relation of the colors to each other… at least roughly.
In V5 with smart saturation the profile entirely assumes a different shape.
Now this is a serious issue if you want to "blow up" the profile and at the same time reduce the regular "saturation" (the whole process intentionally targeted to further print related editing in Photoshop).

The inner colored profile is a regular P45 Outdoor Daylight.
The outer colored profile is P45 Outdoor Daylight with global saturation increased by +30 in the Color Editor of V4.
The inner white profile is P45 Outdoor Daylight with global saturation increased by +30 in the Color Editor of V5.
I think this will be also an issue when you are creating your own profiles.
I can't imagine that "smart saturation" is helpful at all for these purposes.
I can imagine that not many care about this. But if so, please contact the Phase One support with a feature request - they should either return to the conventional saturation mode of V3/V4 or should add a slider with conventional saturation.
Thanks!

Hi.
You should try to use the "advanced tab" in case you need a global saturation increase.0 -

how? There is no way to increase global saturation in the advanced tab unless you pick the single colors from color target shot.

Did you get the actual problem regarding "smart saturation" in conjunction with the creating/editing of profiles?0 -
In the advanced tab, you press the "plus" sign. This gives you a full circle. Now you can increase the global saturation in absolute terms using the saturation slider (and save the ICC in case you need it).

Lionel - you made my day. Many, many thanks! [quote="Lionel12" wrote:
never figured out that one as I always pick the colors from the image working in the advanced tab. Good to know!

now this is infact different from the full circle in the basic tab.
Apparently "smart saturation" only applies to the basic tab but not to the advanced tab.
Awesome!
Thanks again!0 -
Excellent discussion and work around! Two thumbs up. 0 -
That's a nice feature, I love the selective sta and hue… thanks to have shown how to do a complete range saturation…
I have a dumb question though… what's the difference between "smart saturation" (applied to all colours) and "saturation" within exposure tab ?0 -

The saturation in the exposure tab has been "smart saturation" for some time (since C1 4.5 or so?). But saturation in the exposure tab doesn't affect the input profile, whilst adjustments in the Color Editor modify the input profile.
"Smart Saturation" in general works like this: colors being already quite saturated are less affected and colors being less saturated are more affected. In effect it’s a compression method to avoid color clipping.0 -
Tanks thowi
I'll have to think about that!0 -

Don't worry too much about that. Simply adjust your images to your taste - but always take a look a the histogram and the RGB values (and activate the exposure warning [=cmd+E])
