capture one 9 colour with Nikon D810
I really dislike the Capture one 9 colour engine compared to 8. I'm finding that when I used to push contrast to about +25 points in version 8 I used to get really nice highlights in the hair and it rendered skin tones really nicely. Version 9 leaves hair really mousey (which may be more accurate but not as nice) Also I find the tonality to be somewhat blocky, it's like really crude looking gradations rather than the subtle gradations I got from 8. Also it feels too magenta too which can't be corrected with using the tint slider. I've bought version 9 but have gone back to 8. I like 8 but at some point I'm going to have to upgrade. Whats going on with this new colour approach and is there a way to get round it? (By the way, I've tried increasing contrast by just pushing the RGB curve but have the same problem).

Weird. If anything, the new contrast algorithm is supposed to be more subtle than in v8.(By the way, I've tried increasing contrast by just pushing the RGB curve but have the same problem).
Have you tried pushing the Luma curve?0 -
Yes thats what I was expecting. Yes I just tried the Luma curve but same thing. Overall I find version 9's colour handling is just not good. It's like it's operating in a really narrow colour gamut or something. I mean, it drives me mad, to the untrained and super particular eye it looks fine, it's not like I've got something set up way off but it's just not as nice to my eye. I checked with a couple of other industry professionals with my files on the screen with the which do you prefer picture on left or picture on right test and they all prefer the version from capture one 8.. 0 -
Can you check what Engine your CO9 is using (Base Characteristics > Engine)?
If you really don't like the way CO9's engine renders your pictures, then maybe you could revert back to using CO8's engine within CO9?0 -
It's using the capture one 9 engine. You can change it to the 9 engine from the 8 but if it was captured in capture one 9 you can't convert it down to the 8 engine. Maybe Capture one could give us the option for that in a future update.. 0 -
See, in another topic, this reply by Christian Gruner : "In preferences, just set the engine to V8, and all new images coming in will be in the 8 engine. If you have a 9 engine image, and want it in 8 enging, just create a new variant
."

Hope this helps.0 -
How about giving us that blind picture test as well? 😊 0
