If you have downloaded and installed C1 v9, you can use it for 30 days in trial mode (which is fully functional) while you sort out licensing. It can't just activate because you have v8 - how would it know that you have paid for the upgrade? But when you buy the upgrade you get a new license code (that then works for both v9 and v8).

Most CO8 licenses does not have an upgrade included in them. Therefore you need to input a new CO9 license.

Once done, that license will work for all CO9 releases, so basically a one-time thing.

Sounds good. As long as Phase One provide you a license after purchase:

    Hello,

Yes, sure it's a good idea to remember P1 password.. when possible and it should be possible, when stored in a safe place (this account also allow to activate and deactivate software..!). There's an application called "1password" which can help to retrieve all these personal data.

Most of major app upgrades require the new licence input, not only C1. From LR5 to LR6 too, you have to enter the new license number and to connect to Adobe.. so what ?

But just here to say that the Phase One software activation is the best one method available.. Do you have installed LR6 standalone once with all the tralala process and "Adobe software management application", additionaly the Desktop CC appli which is also required, just to allow Adobe's app software management and updates to work. My god..!!!

I only hope that P1 will not change this way to retrieve all personal software data needed to upgrade, activate aso..!!

And if he has a subscription then he doesn't have to buy an upgrade and he is right that Capture One 9 did not automatically activate using the valid subscription license of Capture One 8.

+1 to Mimot13 for drawing attention to 1Password. I have used this for around 3 years and it is brilliant.

In a case of subscription, you're right.. the user doesn't need to buy a specific upgrade. But he still has to login/password at a certain time, to validate the upgrade or simply to "connect" to verification services for license rights ? Il all these cases you need to keep login informations not too far from your workstation.

for the last 2 years or so when I updated from say 8.1.1 to 8.2 or to 8.3.2 I've had to input serial number and account password at every update. Kind of annoying and not sure why this is happening on multiple machines.

Did you overwrite the existing installation ?
Have you tried running the Permissions repair from OSX' Disk Utility?

My 8 updates never asked me about any licence information from first activation up to 8.3.4.
9 is a separate release so it will ask you 1 more after update since it is using a separate licence.

Regarding lost license, there was 2 threads regarding this issue of lost activation and of them where related to permissions. So Permissions repair from OSX' Disk Utility will solve issues for future cases.

System file permissions are automatically protected, and updated during Software Updates. The Repair Permissions function is no longer necessary and has been removed in El Cap.

I always label my C1P installations so I can have a few different versions i.e. 8.1.1, 8.2.2, 8.3 etc so I can go back to an older version when something goes wrong. Especially recently dealing with Mac Pros on 10.9.5 - seems to be a GPU driver issues preventing tethering on 8.2 something and up.

I am not sure that thread starter runs El Capitan.
