Very odd color problem
I have been extremely pleased with the results of Capture One since I bought it. But, today I had to shoot an Orange Sparkle guitar and had problems. Oddly enough, the thumbnails looked correct. but the full size image looked like the reds were desaturated. So I processed the nef's via C1, and then I did it through Nikon Capture.
NC did a much more accurate job.
The image below has the C1 images on the left side and the NC image on the right. (Front and back view)
The acxtual guitar color is orange like the NC shots. The C1 shots seem rust colored!
Any ideas???

Which C1 profile are you using? Have you tried the ETC profiles for your camera? They tend to be more accurate. Well worth the purchase, in my opinion.

I am using the C1 Nikon D70S profile, and it works great. Except for this guitar that is getting an odd color shift.

Color is a deep issue, and everyone has their own Taste. In your case, you know exactly the color of this guitar, so lets try to figure out why it came out wrong in Capture One.
Be aware that taking a RAW image into Nikon software before Capture One can make a mess of an image as well.
You don't say what camera you're shooting so I will assume it is a D70s.
What White Balance setting did you choose?
Auto WB is a poor choice due to variablility. Custom WB has been an issue with the D2x in that Capture One cannot read the encrypted data. So, choosing a constant pre-set, capturing a true gray card or MacBeth in order to set WB in Capture One usually gets dead-on color.

Review the Color Management settings used for output.
The ICC profile chosen as the destination color is very importan. For web site posting sRGB is the profile of choice while Adobe RGB 1998 is used by most for photo printing; and there is CMYK output for commercial printing as well.
A color calibrated monitor with all set to use that profile, and analyzed in Photoshop in Proof Mode can pretty much show you exactly what you will get for output.
While there are other great camera profiles available for purchase, the PRO version include the Color Editor that allows you to create your very own profile.
A lot of potential variables with this. Let us know what you can determine.

Yes, I am using a D70S, and no I did not open it in Nikon Capture first. Only after I could not get the problem fixed in C1.
Again, the thumbnails in C1 display the color accurately! But when I view it full size in C1, the orange color turns to a rust color! I can watch it happens as it focuses!
Here are two screen shots. The first shows the color is correct. The 2nd shows how it became a rust color instead of orange as it should be.
When I export to Photoshop, it is also in the rust color. Something is wrong in C1.

Sounds very strange if the color is initially correct but then it shifts... maybe there is a delay in which the profile is being applied to the image?

Or use the color editor to make your own profile as KC suggests. (Try this first as it won't cost you anything but some time.)0 -

Do you have a MacBeth ColorChecker chart? Or for that matter any sort of color standard? Even back in the film days, whenever you are working for a critically accurate color reproduction, it helped to take a frame with the color standard included with the same lighting/settings. It really is the only way to be sure that your result could be adjusted correctly by the lab. As the man said, color perception involves variables in our own eyes and senses, not to mention the variable interaction of your subjects color and the color gamut of the imaging technology - film or digital. Ever try to get an accurate blue using Ektachrome? (I'm glad thats over!) That orange tele may be some combination color that justs sits out of a gamut or near the edge. I have not seen this technically proven, but I am beginning to believe that near-gamut edge colors must be suspect to some sort of variability in the processing code and how it assumes what out of gamut colors get replaced with. Hence differences between converters, and differences between conversions within the same convertor. (Hey CO, any thoughts?)
Anyway, I have to use color standards photographing horses, as breeders get pretty touchy about an accurate color....and processing the same image file in CO, DPP, CS2 gives three different results....so which is 'accurate'? You will only know if there is a known standard in the image.
Wonder how my Gibson L5-CESN would look? 😉

Hi, I think you're just running into the limitations inherent in a canned profile. In a catalogue situation that it seems you have you don't need to take your chances with that, you can build your own profile using your own lights and setup.

I don't beleive for one second it is a profile issue. In my attached pics you can clearly see that in preview mode the color is ORANGE, and when you zoom to full size, it is RUST. The color shift is happening in Capture One, not due to a profile. 0 -

Yes, we see the color shift and we have an ongoing Support Case very similar to this. Good suggestions have been made here. The Profile is what begets color. There are plenty of Tools available to get color the way you need it for a difficult project.

There are limitations in color: Google anomolus reflectance and see what can happen.
Yes, it would be great to get perfect color every time. When you don't, there are plenty of tools available to adjust and improve.

BUT, as you can tell, this is a tough one to explain in an email to support.
And again, I think the profile is working great for me.
The issue just shows with this color, and it looks FINE in preview but NOT full size! Thats a program \"glitch\" in my opinion.

Do you have your output profile/color space matching what your viewing them in... if your proof profile is NOT set to "Destination" profile you could be looking at a great RGB file and outputting to CMYK... it's worth checking anyway. 0
