I have imported pictures (not so many, just for testing) into catalogs on two different machines, both running on ML, without any issue.

I have tried 10 times , no way
the files are from the Leica M9

I have also imported M9 files as well as D800 and OMD. They were all on an external HD's while the catalogs were on the internal HD of each machine.
I suggest you to contact Phase One Assistance through the web site, attaching to the support case the relevant crash reports so that they can possibly identify the reasons thereof.

I have the same issue, tried 20.000 at at time and it CRASHED, tried 700 and it CRASHED, running ML on a MAC PRO.

it seems it is not stable at all. Besides the catalog size seems to increase size enormously (importing just on the current location, that is to say not moving any image).....

    best regards

I have tried only a few photos, same for me
They have to fix that bug

The main reason why I was using lightroom was because a real catalog was missing on C1

I imported 2000 Pictures to a catalog with Mountain Lion 10.8.2. without crash.
My configuration is a Mac Book Pro Retina 2.6, 16GB, 512 GB SSD.

An idea would be to name the specs of you machines and of your Mountain Lion Version. So the ones with problems can compare their specs as it seems not to be a generic ML problem.

Why is the catalog so big? It's the same thing as in Lightroom or in Aperture. The catalog contains the previews. In the moment you access a new directory with new files C17 starts to generates previews. In my case 2560px Previews with 1.2 to 2.5 Megabytes per Preview. so 200 Previews result in a 250-500MB Catalog size.
It seems these are the same .cop files used in Capture 6 but now they are stored in the catalog, instead of in a subdirectory of your session directory.
