Importing Aperture libraries and geotagging
Hi, all -- a (hopefully) simple question from a CaptureOne newbie...
Like many, I'm looking for a new home for my photos after the untimely demise of Aperture. Many of my images are travel-related, and so are geotagged. To start by toe dipping, I exported a few months of images into a new Aperture library and have been doing trial imports of that library into CaptureOne.
I've found that iPhone images in my test library import correctly, with no damage to their geotagging. But RAW files from my DSLR that I've geotagged inside Aperture get their location data stripped off during the import. Inside Aperture, at least, the location data shows up in identical EXIF fields for both. I tried using Aperture's function to "Write IPTC metadata to original" on the files (just in case), re-imported the library, and still no location data.
So my question is this -- is there anything I can do (either in Aperture, in CaptureOne, or in some other app) to allow me to import my Aperture images with location data intact?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

The iPhone images do have the geo location in the EXIF, so not much can go wrong here. Your DSLR raw files do not have this information in EXIF but as IPTC, I think, because you add them later.
What might happen is, that during the import of the Aperture library (I assume you import the library in CO8) the geotags are not transferred. Could be an issue with the import library function. Not sure.
What you could do for a test is to export the raw files with and XMP file for the metadata from Aperture. Next, you import that image in CO8 through the regular Import Images. Reading XMP metadata during import is pretty solid, so you might want to give that a chance.0 -
I still use Nikon software, even though I've 'converted' to Capture One Pro (Nikon Transfer in Nikon ViewNX-1 to bring my NEFs into my computer from my Nikon cameras.) I've a dedicated GPS, which I've stopped using (and will end up on EBay.) I use a phone app to log my tracks. Each track, when completed, gets uploaded via email to my computer.
In ViewNX-i (or View NX2) I pull in the relevant .gpx track, for a given folder, then tag the NEFs (in the map module of View NX.)
Once the NEFs have been tagged in this fashion, they are imported into Capture One Pro. COP always shows the GPX coordinates. It's 100% accurate.
I've also been known to use the very excellent GeoSetter app. It's free. If you're non-Nikon, non-LR (can geotag as well) then GeoSetter is the way to go for geotagging.
When I first started geotagging my NEFs, it was with a phone. I'd take a shot with the phone, then use the GPS coordinates from the shot, to paste into the relevant NEF(s), in LR 3.n.
Then I purchased a dedicated GPS unit. Drains battery and does not generate a track, plus takes time to kick in even when coming out of snooze mode.
A simple geotag phone app is the way I do it now. Definitely the most functional solution, all things considered.
Hope this helps.0 -

It's looking like that to me.[quote="Paul_Steunebrink" wrote:

I tried this, too -- exported two photos from Aperture, one with "imbedded" geotag and one with an XMP sidecar file. CO8 only shows location data for the photo with the sidecar file.
I'd rather not have to do this for my whole Aperture library -- I've got about 50,000 geotagged photos in a few hundred folders. I really don't have time to hand-import them all one folder at a time.0 -
Hi guys,
Another user with the same problem here and that's what I did 😉
I went crazy trying to import all my Aperture Library 1,5TB (> 80.000 photos) into CO8... after ~6h importing I realized that no GPS information was imported!!! 👿
What I did is to research why of that behavior and the result was that Aperture software don't use the Exif standard to save location. After that I understood that, the solution was easy. I just used HoudahGeo (but you can use any other app) to convert Locations into Exif GPS Data and finally import into CO again and everything went fine.
The worst thing is the license price ($29) of that software 😕0
