I really don't want to switch to Lightroom3, but its easier than reinstalling 10.5.

Canon has yet to deliver a tethering SDK (software developer kit) that works properly with Snow leopard. When they do we will update Capture One to provide more reliable support.

best OS is 10.5.8... aside from that Capture One version should not make a big difference.

*However, 5.0.2 has been reported from many users to be much better in terms of overall performance.

I have an issue that happens on both 10.5.8 (imac for studio) and and 10.6.4 ( for location shoots).

I am a fashion shooter as such we shoot alot of shots each day. There are generally between 10 and 30 outfit changes and anywhere from 30 to 300 frames shots per outfit.

In the (good) old days of CaptureOne I used to comfortably shoot to cards and download. With the new versions one of the most annoying things is the PROXIES. I dont have a need to archive nor to have metadata database built of every image captured. What I do need is to get those files onto the computer as fast as possible. Downloading using capture can take upto 20minutes ( 4Gb card). So we've been downloading cards using finder which is frankly a rediculous workflow method considering the cost of the software. As far as I'm aware there is no way to turn this off.

So I have been shooting tathered and it has been a faster than downloading from cards. Having said that something happens usually in the second half of the day which is that we get to a stage where the images shot get stuck and it takes around 5 minutes of waiting to get even a small number of files from the camera to the computer. I am puzzled as to whether its the camera ( 5d MkII) buffer or the capture software. We have done some troubleshooting but cannot figure out what it could be. As I said the 1st half of the day is usually pretty smooth.

Can anyone help with these two issues?

    1. Proxies slowing down the Card to Computer download

    2. Tethered bottleneck slow down in the second half of a large session

    1. This is an issue discussed here a few times. Till the proxy generation during import can be switched off, my best take is to use a dedicated import tool like Photo Mechanic (which has other nice features, a bit expensive for import only)
    2. Also heard a few times here. No clue yet and whether this is to be solved through the highly anticipated update to the Canon SDK that has to bring a solution, but are you doing any restart of camera and or computer during the day and have the slow down despite that?

In terms of troubleshooting, you could use EOS Utility for tethering instead of Capture One. You can have CO5 running anyway, starting it after EOS Utility and your camera connected, and use the CO5 hot folder option. If the slow down still occurs, it may not Capture One.

In general, when I work with CO5 for several hours, I prefer an intermittent restart (same for Photoshop and some other software). I have an eye on Activity Monitor and can see what's happening (RAM been eaten up entirely).

This could very well be addressed in a new SDK. Hard to say from a third party perspective but we know that there are imperfections in the current SDK that can result in that behavior. Odds are if we noticed it, so did Canon.

One thing that wasn't specified is how many images are in your session by the afternoon. If you are creating sessions that have over say, 300 images in one 'capture' folder, C1 will definitely run drastically slower than a session with less images in that folder.

The workaround I use on a fashion shoot with multiple looks is to create the session folder, then in finder, create a subfolder within the session folder for each look. Then in C1 instead of using the session folder window at the top of the viewer tab, use the finder style tab toward the middle and locate your session, then the subfolders for each shot. Right click on each folder for each corresponding look and select as capture folder. This way each look will go into its own subfolder.

This workflow should speedup the capture process.

Also, if using finder to download images into the computer, I suggest a high speed firewire card reader and high speed cf cards... By using finder to transfer, the transfer of images will be very quick. I get a 4gig card transferred in under 2 minutes. This is using sandisk extreme cards.

Once you then drag and drop your images into your capture folder and then select that folder in C1, your proxies and temp files will be built. This will take some time.

I have yet to test wheteher it is faster to transfer images in finder, then have C1 create the temp files...

or if it is faster to have C1 import the images while creating the temp files at the same time...

    just my .02
