what´s about IPTC
Dear Friends,
- when can we expect an useful IPTC-function - why have you eleminate this so important function in version 4 - it can´t be so difficult to implement a working IPTC-workflow ...
before version 4, Phase one offered a complete workflow with no need of other software, one for all... a verx nice philosophy ... until version 4...
tnx

I could live with a simple pass through of the IPTC data I have attached to my RAW files using PhotoMechanic. I was given an indication that might well come with 4.6... My complaint and support case goes back to the first release of 4 Pro.
By putting it in my RAW files, which I can do on location, the metadata stays with my images whatever I do; backups, conversions etc. The only thing I don't do is save for web in any application because they ALL seem to strip copyright and caption data. And that is one purpose above all others that needs credit and copyright details to be retained.0 -
Hello
Some parsing is implemented in 4.6.3 and full parsing (including GPS tags etc) will be available in 4.70 -
I look forward to it as long as it supports metadata embedded in the RAW file. I don't expect that there is a proposed schedule for the release of 4.7? 0 -
Are you guys nuts ??!! (by guys I mean Phase One)
Here is a function that worked perfectly well in version 3. Not just any function, an essential part of any professional photographer's workflow. Essential as in this is as important a part of a professional workflow as colour profiles, output destinations, rename on import.
And now you're promising to (re) implement it in 4.7!!
Surely you jest.0 -
Has anyone checked 4.7 yet? I see no mention of this in the release notes.
Without this version 4 is unusable for my purposes. Is it worth me downloading 4.7 as I will not get chance to test it before the weekend. I have now tested many versions of 4 Pro on promises that it was coming in probably the next release. I am getting tired of waiting and wasting my time...
I have tried downloading the User Guide 3 times from different servers and it has just hung up on me!0 -
Should be working just fine according to our imagecore team.
They have tested GPS tags etc.
User guide is a part of the installation, just go to the help menu once it is installed.0 -
Ulf, the PhaseOne imagecore team need to test better and with a wider range of other software.
It does now pass the IPTC data through from the RAW file - SORT OF. It seems OK for JPG.
But I have two copies of the same image as 16 bit TIF created in the same process run (7minutes apart) and one (second one output) has full IPTC data visible to PS CS2 and Windows Vista but nothing is visible in the other! No IPTC data is visible at all by PhotoMechanic 4.6 or FotoStation pro 5 (sees no EXIF).
Still a problem as my workflow is generally from RAW to 16bit TIF to 8bitTIF or other final format after cleaning. I need to be able to rely on the Metadata being in the 16bit TIFF.
And as an aside it predicted a 40sec process run that took over 200!
So that is yet another wasted hour testing unfinished software from PhaseOne. It would have been a LOT cheaper to write off my investment and buy another RAW converter - I have now wasted more than £1,000 of my time on this over the last 6 months.0 -
Hi Martin,
Log a support request/bug report. Before v4.6.3 and v4.7 Phase One said IPTC was not yet implemented properly. Now they are saying IPTC is working. If it's not then it's a bug, not a missing feature. FWIW no app is perfect but I'm sure you know photography is about compromises!
Capture One still has a way to go with IPTC including IPTC Core. It is an open standard, fully documented. Phase One has demonstrated they can find embedded metadata in proprietary Raw file formats. Obviously priorities go elsewhere but they need to be careful. More photographers like you are demanding respect for their metadata.

I raised a support case back in November. They closed it because it was not a bug! Even though it was/is supported in 3.x.
I will get it opened again but I am not going to spend time sending 160Mb files to them - they can try testing it properly - I found the problem with my first test every time I have tried a new release..
In the meantime I am going back to retesting Breezebrowser and Bibble (although they are taking for ever to release version 5). I used both in the past before C1.0 -
Hi,
just downloaded 4.8 - can´t find anything new concerning IPTC - same desaster since start of vers. 4.0 - unbelievable how much energy they invest to destroy a real good reputation... how can you (phase one) offer a 'professional software' without full IPTC function, a non labeled picture is simply worthless for any professional photographer. A so named 'professional software' with a one-line description field that ends in the nirwana if you use it and makes it impossible to read the whole line, all in one or to read over is no more funny thats embarrassing.
If that is the level of programming it is an evidence of incapacity, sorry to say...
☹️ james0 -
James, I have to agree. So I'll still have to use ACR as this converter keeps all metadata und is capable of updating embedded previews in DNG files. It's a pity P1 isn't able to resolve these two issues ☹️

I raised the issue that not all software can read the passed through IPTC data in TIFF files. PS is not the only software that needs to read it.
I raised a case back in October and I have been re-raising it every release ever since. I have sent them files and even the feedback from the PhotoMechanic people saying how the C1Pro IPTC data in TIFF was not compliant with the standard - no response.
That was a few weeks after 4.7 was released - we now have 4.8 and it is no better.0 -
I have not personally seen the specific cases but it is a tricky one.
I believe our testing dept are primary testing with Adobe products since they are the most common one in the market.
We can not test every single software package in the market which I am sure you can understand.
Also we tend to use TIF validation engines such as JHOVE which is a extremely strict validation of the TIF format.0 -
Ulf - I am more than a little angry at the constant closing of my support case by Phaseone. I have been battling for some effective action since October 2008. Here is my latest response to them:
To Technical Support:
>>>The message I had received, and passed on to you, was that the problem was not just the compatibility with particular software but that it was not compliant with the TIF standard.
You have not addressed that question.
As far as I am concerned version 4 is not fit for purpose.
So this constant reference to the fact that it is in the development track is specious nonsense. I have a problem with your software that does not do what the previous version 3.7.x did - I have effectively paid for an upgrade that I cannot use. So how is this issue closed?
I am not the only user who is dissatisfied with the response - see the forum. <<<
Closing support cases that are not resolved is unacceptable. Are they saying that PhaseOne do not intend to do anything about restoring the removed capability ? Tell me so that I can plan what I do about the problem.
I have an upgrade available to version 4 (and 5) that I cannot use but there has not even been an offer to extend my upgrades by an additional major release as a gesture of compensation. There has not even been an apology!0 -
Here we are version 4.8.1 and IPTC core is still not supported. EVERY piece of P1's competitors' software that I have tested respects the metadata.
The ramblings from P1 a couple of posts prior about the TIF standard don't address the issue raised by the OP.
When are Phase One going to come back from their long lunch and fix this problem that didn't exist in version 3 ??0 -
Back to Square 1.
Apart from keywords little IPTC data is picked up and passed through from Photo Mechanic (4.6.1) through C1 Pro version 5 to TIF or JPG files. And even Photoshop resave now does not seem to work either!
Oh well as I have not been able to activate it despite licence management telling me I have 3 "free" upgrades left. If I have to pay I will almost certainly switch - to what I am not sure yet. I have not looked at the options since the Spring.0
