C1 and Photoshop - Colour Mismatch
Hi there,
I recently bought a Canon 350D and was trying out C1. I noticed that the sky is not as blue in C1 as it is in Adobe Photoshop's RAW convertor.
All my output colour settings are sRGB, and my camera profile is 350D. I have shot in sRGB RAW, so I think there is no problem there.
I have attached an example to illustrate my point:
http://img363.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... tch7fu.jpg
I want the skies to look as blue as displayed by Photshop (the display window on the right in the image above).
This is not an isolated problem with one RAW image - I am unhappy with the colours for my entire RAW collection (although I haven't shot too many as my camera is new).
Thanks

pratap,
Very important here is what was set at the White Balance tab. How you establish White Balance starts the approach to perfect color. The Kelvin setting would have a great affect upon the sky color.
Most important is when comparing color between softwares, be absolutely sure you have calibrated your monitor, created a monitor profile, and have that profile selected in the Color Management window. The most common reason for a color mismatch between Capture One and Photoshop is not Soft Proofing with this exact same color profile. The default color space in Photoshop Soft Proofing is CMYK, so you would see a dramatic difference. View > Proof Setup > choose the correct color profile for a more accurate comparison.
Color Management is a deep subject with lots to learn. There have been extensive discussions on the issue here on the Forum along with screenshots so be sure to do a search and locate these.
Knowledge Base article # 1882 from our web site will help as well.

and article # 1996 discusses the automatic preference settings for Photoshop
done when installing Capture One.

Remember, a RAW image file does not have a Color Space established until you process and set the Destination/Working Space profile desired.
You camera sRGB setting applies to in-camera processed images only.
All of the tools are within Capture One to get exactly one's desired color or Taste, the key is to figure out how to use these tools to get a final result you expect.

Hi KC,
Thanks for your detailed reply. I will check this out later at home.

I have just purchased CO Pro and am having fun playing with it, and with RAW images.
My first batch of test images looked fine when previewed in Caputre One. And they looked fine when I opened them in Photoshop CS2, as high (ish) resolution JPG images. I then reduced their size, and used the Photoshop \"Save for web...\" feature, which opens ImageReady.
When I tried to open one of these low-res (web) images with Photoshop, I got an error message that said, \"The document test.jpg does not have an embedded RGB profile.\" I had a choice of leaving it as it is (not colour managed), using Adobe RGB 1998, or selecting from a long list of options. I've saved the photograph with the \"leave as it is\" option, and it is flat and dull. The red bricks are almost grey, and the grass is colourless.

On the NAPP forum I was told that I needed to work in sRGB throughout, so needed to change the settings in CO to sRGB. But I can't find out how to do that. Do I change the Colour Management Workflow setting to \"Convert to Web Destination?\"
Your assistance would be apprecited.
By the way, it must be my night for technological problems. I tried to read the article mentioned in the post (above) about Photoshop settings, but the link only seemed to go to a brief summary of the article, and not the article itself. Am I missing something?
(The colour in my television also went off today. It must be the Colour Gods playing with me!)
Thanks for your help.0 -
Thanks for those links. I've read both articles, and it's starting to make some sense.
There seem to be two Web settings in Capture One:- sRGB IEC61966-2.1
sRGB v1.10 (Canon)
The software defaults to the first.
In the NAPP forum I was told:Web images usually do not have a color profile, and even if they do, only a few (Macintosh only) browsers can actually use them. All other browsers assume that a web image is sRGB, and the result is that the colors look 'flat' and washed out. If you open an untagged AdobeRGB 'as it is' in another program, that program also assumes it's sRGB, so you get the same problem. Use 'Convert to Profile' and convert to sRGB before you save for the web, or change this setting in CO and work in sRGB all the way.
Following the instructions in the second knowledge base article, I assume I leave my camera setting as it is (Canon EOS 1D MkII) and leave the web desination at the default setting. But then I should process the images under the \"Convert to Web Destination\" selection.
Is my understanding correct ❓
Monitor calibration is next. I have a LaCie Photon monitor, so guess I never really thought about calibration --- until now. More things to confuse me....

We have an \"Expert Support\" contract with Adobe. Before I found this forum, I sent this problem to Adobe under the terms of our support contract. I have just received their official response. I thought I'd share it: When using a third-party program (such as Phase One's \"Capture One\" program), Photoshop is not being used for initial conversion of the image from RAW format. Therefore, it is up to this other software program to assign a color profile to the image in order to allow for correct color management.
If this program is capable of assigning a color profile, it is apparently not performing this function correctly. The lack of a correct color profile will make accurate color management impossible for Photoshop, potentially resulting in all sorts of color balancing issues, such as those you have described.
I would suggest simply using the Camera Raw converter that is built into Photoshop to open these RAW files directly, since Photoshop will assign a color profile to your images automatically.
If you wish to continue using this other software program to convert your camera RAW images, you will probably want to contact the company that made this software to find out why it is not correctly assigning a color profile to your images when it is converting them.
The Adobe answer is essentially (and perhaps not surprisingly) to use Photoshop.
I am currently re-processing my batch of test images using the sRGB setting in Capture One to see if I get better results. Hopefully they will be ready shortly.0 -
Capture One has just finished processing my test batch using the new sRGB settings.
I think there's a marked improvement -- certainly looks much better on my monitor:

Thanks for all the help. Any further suggestions, advice, etc. would be most welcome.0 -
Craig,
thanks for all the postings. Yes, Capture One will embed any of a number of Color Profiles with the correct Color Management settings established. The Capture One Photoshop settings .exe file sets the Preferences in Photoshop to preserve this embedded profile as well.
In general, sRGB is the profile of choice for Web Display and for Fuji lab printers. Adobe RGB 1998 is the choice for many other printers and Kodak labs.
As you're seeing, Color Management is a very deep subjece with much to learn. See another Knowledge Base article # 2095 which ties in most of the articles on this issue.
