3.7.4 LE - Zoom in doesn't seem to work properly?
I just switched my Windows COne LE license to Mac and started using it, and have just noticed something odd - the preview image never updates when you zoom in, the image just gets blocky. The "Focus Tool" works as one would expect, but the large preview image doesn't. It's like the preview isn't being built at the full resolution of the photo.
I know this worked on the Windows version - if you zoomed in, the image would "process" for a couple seconds, then display the actual resolution of the photo. With the Mac version, the Focus Tool is the only place that I seem to be able to see any of the image at full resolution. Also, on the Windows version, I was able to switch easily between an "actual pixels" view and "fit to screen" view - this also seems to be missing on the Mac version, though it doesn't really matter if the preview never actually shows an "actual pixels" view.
Is there something I'm missing? I setting I've somehow gotten wrong?
Thanks for any help.

After a bit of searching, it appears that this is "just the way it is" - is that right? It appears that using higher-res previews caused performance issues for some people, but I'm still mystified by the difference between Windows and Mac in this area.
As it stands currently, the "fit to screen" preview even shows some pixelation, which I take to mean that the preview is actually smaller than its displayed size - approximately 1050 pixels wide. Can this be right? COne is actually generating a preview less than 1/9th the size of the photo, and the only place that I can see the actual resolution of the image is in a small window? If so, this is very disappointing - as I said, the Windows version did not display this behavior the last time I used it.
In fact, I've just downloaded the Windows version of LE and installed it under Parallels, and it works as described - if you zoom to "400%", it takes a couple seconds (under Parallels!), but you get a full-resolution preview that can be scrolled around very responsively (again, under Parallels!). Once you set that zoom level, you can switch back and forth between a "Fit to Screen" and "actual pixels" preview via Ctrl-0 and Ctrl-Alt-0.
If all of the above is true, what on earth is the point of having a "Zoom In" slider in the interface on the Mac? It seems it would only have a purpose on VERY low-resolution screens. Has development of the Mac version of COne been this handicapped by the G4 processor that was, until recently, the only option in Mac laptops? If so, the necessity of the switch to Intel was even greater than I imagined.
Honestly, if I had known that the Mac version of COne was a bit crippled compared to the Windows version, I wouldn't have paid $60 to "upgrade" my license. I only switched the license because of Adobe's buyout of Pixmantec and problems I'd experienced with the Lightroom beta - I wanted a simple, straightforward, high-quality RAW converter for the Mac. The ability to actually see my photos at full-resolution seemed like such a basic function, it didn't even occur to me to check for it - all other RAW converters that I've tried (including COne on Windows) provide this functionality, and I'm stunned that it's missing in COne for the Mac.
I do hope that the switch to Intel processors, particularly in the laptop line, will cause PhaseOne to rethink their handling of the Mac version. At the very least, the ability to choose the size of the preview that COne generates is absolutely necessary. Another possibility, I suppose, would be to have a button or shortcut that will force COne to generate a full-resolution preview "on demand" for the current image.
Sorry if that was a bit of a rant - as I said, I'm just shocked that this sort of feature isn't a given in this day-and-age. I shouldn't have to process my photos, then load in the TIFF/JPEG just to see a full-resolution version of my shots.

rnb2: I use the LE version for Mac and have never experienced what you are describing. I'm at a loss to tell you what it may be .... but it works fine on my machine. I've got it on a dual G5 1.8 and so far have been using it (while on vacation) for ten days in demo mode on a old 1gz G4 powerbook and that works fine in all ways except of course the powerbook is far slower and takes five or six seconds sometimes to update the previews if I'm processing a file.
I do have one glitch but it's odd that it only on the G5. often when I use the crop tool on an image and then scroll to the next shot - that shot will be bigger than the window and I have to zoom out to see the whole frame. Very annoying but very confusing as I can't get it to reproduce on the powerbook.
Both systems are with Mac OSX 10.4 but the G5 is up to date with 10.4.6 while I didn't have time to update the laptop before I left and it's at 10.4.0. ( I"m on dial up out here)
So, I don't think it's just "the way it is" but of course I don't have any ideas as to why the behaviour is happening.
Good luck. 😊0 -
Oh and just to add .... even on the powerbook if the system isn't overloaded by running two apps ( I only have 512 megs) and if I let all the previews generate before I start working - each preview loads in about two seconds the first time (from pixelated to smooth) and faster thereafter and resizing the preview zoom is almost instant. So in that respect I'm very happy with the performance on a tired out four year old machine. Perhaps a reinstall? or check that the location that you are working in is not set to be indexed by spotlight. I've heard that for many programs spotlight indexing can drag the performance down to a crawl. 0 -
rnb2,
This is not the way the app is, it zooms in just fine and performs at least as well as the windows version, much faster too than the Parallels emulation. Perhaps a deletion of your com.apple.captureonedslr.plist prefs would help things?
Failing that, I suggest a reinstall. The Mac version is extremely sweet and very fast under intel.

I know, it is a bit annoying, but thats why I have my focus tool open all the time.
If I zoom in, the picture gets very pixel. It is fine with my 30D, but the pictures from my 350D are just horrible pixel pile.
I didn't know that the windows version is better in this. I have no Windows, so I cannot test this.0 -

Sorry gullevek, you misunderstand. The focus window will always show a rendered (raw conversion of a small area of the picture) view. The big window, the preview is a representation of the whole file and is not designed to be viewed at more than 100%. Capture One, like most RAW converters works on a preview file. All changes are made to this during your file adjustments and these settings are saved. When the file is processed, the settings are applied to the original file to created the TIFF or JPG file.
rnb2 seems to have an issue so that the focus window on his Mac version does not work as well as his windows version which is not correct.
The Mac version at this moment in time is slightly better to use than the PC version ( I have to demonstrate both), but the file quality is identical from both platforms.0 -
No, actually gullevek is seeing exactly what I am - the focus window is fine, it's the preview that I'm having issues with.
I'm running COne on a 1680x1050 monitor, and with the way I have my screen set up, a landscape mode preview displays at approximately 1125x750 pixels (about 12x8 inches) on screen. No matter what I do, if I zoom into the preview, it never generates any more detail - it just pixelates as I zoom in. The focus window works as it should.
In the Windows version, if I set the zoom slider to 400% (why it uses that number I don't know - it corresponds to a 100% or "actual pixels" view in Photoshop), COne will take a couple seconds, then render the zoomed-in view from the RAW file in the Preview window. I can then scroll around the shot very smoothly, checking focus and detail throughout the frame. In the Mac version, zooming in the same amount just results in a pixelated zoomed-in version of the full-frame preview - it will not, under any circumstances, show a full-resolution image in the preview window.
I've just tried trashing the com.phaseone.c1le.plist file, to no avail. It still seems to me that this is "the way it is", but I'd be happy for anyone to tell me the steps to take to prove that it isn't.0 -
I actually just stumbled on a satisfactory solution to the issue: since I'm running a dual-monitor configuration (my MacBook is on an iCurve stand next to my Samsung 21" widescreen panel), I've moved the Focus window to the smaller screen and maximized it. This is giving me a bit better solution than I was used to with the Windows version, as I can now see the whole preview image on one monitor, with a large, full-resolution version on the second monitor.
I'd still like to see a configurable preview size, but this is working well enough for me now to not feel handicapped by it.0
