You can make a new variant. The new variant as opposed to "clone variant" shows a duplicate processing with all settings tro default which is usually neutral.
Then Ctrl+click the original image to show them both on the main working area one next to another so you can zoom in the image and compare whatever parts you want.

PS: If you want to see really untouched raw then set the Base Characteristic - Curve to "Linear" and remove all sharpening and other things you changed from default. A naked raw image is quite ugly to look at usually.

Do you have to make the new variant before adjustments or can you also do it after you have made a few adjustments?

You can make new variants in two ways. Either "New" or "Clone"...

The "Clone" will make a copy of all your mods, so it will be exactly the same as you original variant at the time you make the new variant.

The "New" will make a variant as it was when you originally imported the image, without all changes you made in CO so far.

This was already like that in CO 6.

F7 gives a new clone at default settings. i.e. your original starting image before adjustments. Not sure about cropping though.
Good question. I have always wanted that "preview". Just answered my own question with your help.

I would prefer a "preview" button.
    But each program is different.

    Have a great day
