limit of images in catalog

Is there a limit of how images you can have in one catalog before the performance degrades?

  It also depends on Files Size.
  Approx. 1 IQ180 RAW file = Approx. 4 5D Mark III images.
  
  The answer is rather unscientific, it's ... A Lot.
  
  I currently have a catalog of 40,000 running on a machine with half your Processing power and a quarter of your RAM but they are 5D Mark II files.
