File storage question
I am under the impression that if you store image files internally (using Catalogs) the files would indeed be stored in the catalog itself. And, judging by the size of the catalog, that would be correct.
But I am doing a full backup to a new backup device, and I see a lot -- and I mean many, many -- JPEG, RAW and .cop (?) files of images I know are in the catalog. This happens when I am backing up my "Pictures" folder to the cloud. I'm on a MBPro running the latex C1 software; images were initially imported directly from the sD card into the catalog.
I did do a search for one of these files I see being backed up but Finder can't find it. I'm confused: is an imported file stored only in the catalog? Or is it also stored in a separate folder somewhere? And just what is a .cop (e.g. DSCF1024.RW2.cop) file?
Thanks for you help.

If you have images within the Catalog I would suggest you use the "Export>Original" option.
This will create a Copy of the RAW file and all Adjustments to the location of your choosing.0 -
Hi,
The Capture one uses a package structure for it's catalog, (its really a normal directory, but with a bit set to tell Finder that this directory is a package) so under normal operations MacOSX will not show the contents, if you right click (CTRL Click) to get the contex menu, you can select open->package which will then show you what is in the catalog. In there you will see all the RAW files, JPEGs and other files that CO7 uses. So searching for some picture name will not show up because "Packages" are not searched. This is the same way that iPhoto and Aperture work.
Backup utilities go into the "Package" to do the backup. So they will see all the files. As to them its just a normal directory.
I believe the .cop files are "Capture One Preview" files. There are other files that are for masks and such.
When you import an image into CO7 catalog you have two choices, "Store in Catalog" and "Referenced". When "Store in Catalog" is used, the file is copied into the catalog, and the original can be deleted. Easiest method if reading directly from a SD/CF Card and not wanting access to the RAW files from other programs. When "Referenced" is used, the CO7 Catalog has just a pointer to where the original file is stored in the Catalog, best used if storing pictures on an external drive/nas or want access to the RAW data for other programs. In this mode you are responsible for the directory structure that the images are stored in. In both cases, the .cop files and all other CO7 adjustment files are stored in the catalog.
I personally use the Catalog, with "Referenced" files and I also like to pull them into Aperture (Also as referenced files) for easier management to my iPod and iPhone, and other features that Aperture has the CO7 does not.

Thanks Robert for the excellent and detailed reply. That all makes sense.
I too have both Aperture and C1 on my MBPro, but very seldom use Aperture anymore because of the duplicate file requirements. Your way makes a lot of sense and I will look at the Referenced option closer to see if I can use that method.

Thanks again!
