I had both 5 and 6 installed om my mbp and have had no problems running them seperately.
you have to change the applications name from "capture one" to "capture one 5" / "capture one 6".
at least that's what I did, and capture 6 runs extremely stable...better than any capture program I've ever run.

I have used previous version even at the same time. (3.7 and 4.5) with no major issues. I rename just like NNN...0975 said.
I am switching between v5 and 6.1.1 until 6 works better (still buggy for me)

I always rename the software to the version number.
If you switch back and forth, 6 will read v5 settings, but not the other way around. 6 will also know you have 'upgraded' and switch your workspace to the new default, but it will save your v5 for you, I have stacked up a third 'saved workspace' already. If you open a v6 created session into v5, it will warn you that the cos files have been created in a newer (unreadable) version , not that this will crash or anything, it will simply re-create your preview and adjustment files and renaming the newer version called "....cos.newer" or something like that.

I find it interesting that the "mysessionname.col50" file type is used for both v5 and v6. I think I like this. In v4.5 it made a "*.col45" session file that was not readable by v5, now all of your v5 sessions can be opened in 6.

I haven't spent too much time switching back and forth, but I'd recommend you limit it / or not do it at all unless forced to. I will only use v5 until they repair this bug I have. My NEF files don't re-preview, it simply hangs up generating the preview file.

NNNN...0975 - how is your v6 "extremely stable" there are so many people on this forum with issues.

First a reference to an earlier and similar discussion on this forum:

Second, in contrast to the Windows version, CO4/5/6 on Mac was not designed to be accompanied by a previous version on the same system disk. Of course you can rename the application folder. But supporting files like session files, adjustment files, presets, workspaces and the preference files and so on are shared between versions. And their contents is different due to new features the next version has, confusing the application when you switch back and forth. This can lead to severe instability and heavily complaining users.

CO4/5/6 was designed and tested to upgrade the supporting files to the new version only (not backwards) but in day-to-day practice it happens that a cleaned up system is more stable. This practice has become advise #1 for users experiencing stability issues.

Acknowledging that some users switch successfully between versions on the same disk, the bottom-line is that you should not do that to prevent unpredictable behavior and stability issues.

Fortunately on Mac, it is easy to run OS X on a separate and/or external disk (and boot from that disk). I use one for testing new software and updates, software demos and troubleshooting all the time including defragging the internal volume.

Computers are not that sophisticated. Nothing can beat a clean and lean machine. Keep is simple, sir (KISS)!
