What might we see in Capture One 8?
Hi,
I just switched over from Lightroom last year. I was using it since version 1. I was wondering what you would like to see or can imagine seeing in Capture 8. Any idea if it might come out in 2014? Thanks.

The catalog functionality needs to be fixed so it can be used reliably in a production system. Integration with external editors also needs to be added.
It needs to be made reliable too 😉0 -

Capture one 8 should be in the works and I would expect it to be released this fall at the latest. Looking at the virtual standstill that CO1v7 has been in practically since its release, I assume that all the manpower at Phase one is directed towards developing CO1v8, and the new release should see improvements in the cataloguing features and abilities.
IQ wise, I feel that Phase one has more or less reached all they can for now. I cannot see myself what they could improve in thus area (talking about the Raw conversion here), except perhaps including more tools that make photoshop redundant.
Actually, come to think of it, I don't really know what to look forward to in CO1v8. but I'll be happily surprised by Phase one...

Support for PEF files from Pentax 645D ! 0 -
This post is also on the Software for Windows Board.Although I don't use a Mac I still frequent this page as there is a lot of overlap in terms of info/tips and wonder if anyone else thinks it might be worthwhile merging the Boards? 0 -
If P1 would add support for color balance, HDR, and curves to be made as adjustment layers, I'd offer to beta test…or snag the upgrade the first hour it's out!
And yeah, stability and speed. Though things have gotten a lot better in 7.1.6.0 -
* catalogue needs to be overhauled. It is pretty much useless right now. Besides a lot of bugs and problems (eg not proper clean up when you remove images) there needs to be stuff like "parent folder shows all stuff inside", "multiple folder select", "merge catalogues", "double import prevention if images are IN the catalogue", etc. I think this should be one of the main points in the new version.
* layers should support all the tools, like curves, etc. No reason it cannot
* quick hide/show of the color ID tags you can set. They are nice, but they are always there and you cannot quickly hide them or move them around.
* when I do B/W conversion and work with the color picker to change a color, it should show that color or be showable via a checkbox. Would help a lot to pick the right color without turning B/W on and off
* original vs edited compare like in Lightroom. Currently you need to make a new variant to do this. Annoying
* easier keyword selection and add. I need to add keywords per image and can't, eg select several images and add keywords to all of them at the same time. Also keyword list/tree would be very helpful. This should be a have to for catalogue.
* built in Maps for setting/editing GPS like in LR
* sync colors in sidecar files (would be a nice one)
* finally use basic Capture One 3 settings 😉 but well, that won't happen anyway.
* stability. Right now C1 works very well for me, but the first version of Version 7 where very very unstable and crash prone. Not fun.
* my favorite wish: thumbnail browser as detachable tool I can move to my second monitor. Like it was in C1 Version3. Pretty please!
* no more resetting the UI when I do a minor version upgrade. That gets old, I have about 20 old interface preferences there.
* a proper manual that describes what Levels/History/Curves are. They all look a bit different and I still have no clue which is which or in which order it is best to edit. Curves first? Levels last?
* better noise reduction would be nice too
* perhaps some clone tool or at least bigger dust/spot removal stuff. otoh we would get too much into Photoshop land here.
* if I put the curves tool in a floating window, why can't I make it much bigger like the history?
Well thats what comes into my mind right now.0 -
My wish list:
- Basic HDR and panoramas or some kind of integration with specialized programs. With HDR I mean natural looking images.
- Easily make a custom profile with a ColorChecker target in difficult lighting situations, eg. leds.
- A notepad tool outside of IPTC metadata.
- Updated EXIF version.
- White balance support to layers.
- Ability to draw lines with mask brush by shift-clicking.
- An oval brush to retouch long hairs ("worms") with dust removal tool.
- Stacks or similar grouping in browser.
- Standardized colour tags.
- Album subfolders.
- Search and replace text in file names (batch).
- Copy the file name to IPTC title tag (batch).
- Import CO3 sessions like LR catalogs 😉
Of course these would be nice to have already in 7.2 update.0 -

I fully agree re. the need for this, but it should be provided by PhaseOne as a for-free version 7 bug fix.
And it should be provided today rather than tomorrow or awaiting the release of a v.8.

I am a "renegade" of Aperture, I came worm C1 largely for the quality of the treatment(processing) of the images ( raws ).
I left Aperture has cause of its opposition to progress, I do not think that we can say so many C1.
The version 7 is still "young" and before demanding 8 I would like to see succeeding this one.
The innovation for the innovation leads(drives) leads(drives) has nothing!
It is enough to look at DxO (and I am French) to see that it is not enough to want always to have the last "regulation" to be the best.
Quality of treatment(processing) (excellent this day) and improvement of catalogs should were enough at first.
And what it is 7 or 8..... 😉 😉 😉 😉0 -

Hmm.
I agree but would add that there can be situations, as I have seen with other products, where there is simply no obvious 'fix' that can be applied. In may cases, especially where the underlying technology has had to change for advances to be possible, the application developers can be at the mercy of the development tool developers and the workings of the chosen database system. In many cases there are additional third parties providing components for the system so that the developer (and their customers) do not have to fund the cost of re-inventing a wheel. Now and again a bought in wheel may not be perfectly rounded.
I guess it would be possible to build a large enough team with broad expertise to develop an entire system from the ground up and so have total control over to ensure 100% functionality and resilience. No doubt such systems exist in the corporate enterprise world. Not within reach of my budget of course but I guess many here may have deeper pockets.
On the other hand given the number of people with a negative reaction to the Adobe's subscription pricing model (at least initially) maybe pockets are not so deep?
Getting the balance right is never easy.
