Anyone using the new 27 in Imacs????
If you are how is the thing run.
We need 2 new units for the studio and cant find the older ones with the firewire 800 ports new anymore.
I hate the fact that apple didn't include the FW800 on this generation.
Thunderbolt isn't where it needs to be for power users yet.
Thanks

get a Thunderbolt to FW adapter. Or get one of the external PCI cases with a FW card inside.
I know it sucks, but with Apple it is their way or "get lost"0 -
What do you need the Firewire Port for specifically? 0 -
Rob372, if you are in L.A., I would love to sell you my 27" 2.8ghz i7 quad core iMac that has a FW800 port. 0 -
I used one of the new 27" iMacs for a shoot just this morning. With a thunderbolt-to-FW adapter, it works just fine. Obviously, a FW-connected Phase One DB can't get power through a thunderbolt port, so you need to keep a couple freshly-charged batteries on set. My favorite thing so far about the new machines, they have a nicer video card than anything available for the towers.
My personal opinion; firewire sucks out loud. It's fussy, it's fickle, and it likes to embarrass you in front of clients. Fully 95% of the problems I've had with the P45+ back are FW cable-related. And under some circumstances, an accidentally-disconnected DB will remain stubbornly un-connected to the Mac until you reboot. I'm no Mac fanboy, but I will miss FW about as much as I miss the SCSI interface on the PowerPhase.
All this having been said, the Apple store currently has a refurbished mid-2011 iMac 27-inch 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 available for $1789. Add $169 for Applecare and you should be good to go.0
