import from camera?

    1. CO tethers cameras and imports from storage media. Importing from camera is not supported. Try using 'Image Capture' from the OS. There is a lot of detailed information already about how to do this in threads on this forum.
    2. According to the manual, Auto-Keystone and Auto-Rotate are available for IQ backs only. So maybe you have "No way!".
    3. Yes, lens correction is applied automatically. You can switch it off from the tool menu (3 dots, next to the question mark, in the top right corner of the tool). More info here: http://help.phaseone.com/en/CO8/Editing ... ction.aspx.

Welcome to Capture One! The answers to your questions are:

1: If you attach your camera when C1 is open it takes this as a request to open a tethered shooting session, which means that you have to remove the SD card and insert it into your computer to import from the camera.

2: The keystone is quite easy to use and offers manual and automatic corrections. It is probably best to read the full Help Menu entry (http://help.phaseone.com/en/CO8/Editing ... ction.aspx).

3: Lens correction is not automatic in that you have to select your lens from a drop down, but once selected the corrections are applied automatically. If you have several images you can batch process them.

FWIW, I was an Aperture user for many years, and had a hard look at available replacements including 2 separate trial versions of LR, when Apple dropped it. There were several factors in selecting C1 over the others, including the fidelity of the library transfer. Bottom line after 3 months of regular use is I wouldn't go back to Aperture even if Apple reversed their decision to cease supporting it.

    Re 1:
Most cameras support different kind of USB connection modes.

    For Nikon see:

When using MSC and connecting the camera to the Mac, the SD card should be mounted as regular volume and you can then import from that volume.

    Thanks for all the answers.

It seems that Lightroom CC is probably the best fit for me at this time for reasons #1 & 2. Especially #2... LR can correct pretty accurately most of the time with one click and with how much im shooting (currently I shoot real estate) speed is of the essence.

However, I do foresee the necessity to tether a lot in my future as I move more into commercial and editorial work so I will keep it in mind.

    1. How do I import from my camera? (Yes I know I wouldn't usually do that however, my camera is malfunctioning randomly and my repair shop can't reproduce it so they won't fix it so I'm not removing the card from my camera at the moment because I'm too busy to have it stop working altogether.) When I create a session and/or try to import, I can only select files from my computer and any mounted disks. The camera doesn't mount.

I had an unusual failure with a particular CF card a few years ago. The camera service centre diagnosed a CF card interface board problems (in camera) and a body repair was applied.

    It made no difference.

In the end I worked out that the card ( a new one) was intermittently faulty. The manufacturer changed the card for me and it has worked ever since - about 6 years now.

Make sure it is not the card.

Once you are OK with the card you can adopt a card reader solution that, most likely, will be much faster and more flexible than using the camera as the "disk drive" - given the likely age of the camera.

    Hi there,

I'm trying out Capture One. I'm a lightroom user. Couple of questions right off the bat:

Glad the various replies helped. Don't give up trying something new too soon - I'd very much agree with SFA re card -v- camera as the source of download images. After so many years doing it from the camera it took a while to feel comfortable with a card but (a) now I'm used to it I much prefer not having to deal with hooking up the camera every time and (b) it leaves the USB hook up as an option for dedicated tethered shooting which I'm keen to try out soon.

Good point about not having to hook up the camera.

CF cards are slightly prone to issues of poor handling if the pins get bent but SD cards are unlikely to be damaged by regular sensible handling.

On camera USB sockets, on the other hand, may not be entirely robust and replacing a card or card reader is likely to be mush more cost effective, should it be necessary, than getting the camera fixed. Also more convenient and quite probably faster.

I have almost always removed cards (especially SD cards once SD card readers started to be built into computers) and have yet to suffer any problems. Indeed I was able to recover the files on my previously mentions faulty CF card via the card reader and it may have been somewhat more challenging to do that directly from the camera.
