System requirements for C1 6.x
I'm using Capture One Pro 5 at the moment on a Windows XP PC. If I upgrade to Version 6, should it be OK? In other words, are the system requirements for version 6 any greater than for version 5?

Capture One 6 32 bit is supported on Windows XP just as Capture One 5. 0 -

Thanks, Drew
I know it is, but I wondered whether in practice it needed more memory, better graphics, etc, or whether because version 5 works well for me I ought to be OK for version 6 too.

According to my experiences, CO 6 does not put a bigger load on your hardware than CO 5 when using the same features (see remark), so you'll should be fine with 6 as you're with 5 today. Best to do a test drive yourself (30 days).
Two remarks:
1) CO 6 supports OpenCL graphics acceleration with a limited set of graphics adapters, making it run faster than CO 5
2) CO 6 does have some new features in Pro like local adjustments that can put a bigger strain on system (tip: test drive)0 -

I really doubt this statement. ❓
Given the way how C1 6 use memory, C1 6 can easily hit the limit of 2GB virtual memory limit of any 32bit Windows. If you are telling the truth, please explain why so many fellows here encounter the "Out of Memory" error and that remains unsolved for months.

I run W7 32bit w/ 4Gb (3gb for the system/1gb for the ram disk = http://www.superspeed.com/desktop/ramdisk.php), my raw files are small of course (10-12-16 mp) - never had such "out of memory issue" w/ C1... I'd assume that those issues are for big raw files 20+mp or when you try to run C1 along w/ Photoshop (or other memory hungry applications) at once...0 -

Thanks. If I go for the 30 day trial and it doesn't work for me, how easily can I revert to version 5?

Just curious whether you have enabled OpenCL or not. I have a GTS 450 with 1GB video RAM.
I encountered the Out of Memory error even when running C1 6.1 alone, editing a folder of less than 10 photos from my Lumix LX5, which are just 10MP. After just a few local adjustment and changes in the charity slider of 1 photo, C1 failed. This was very frustrating and disappointing.0 -

During and after the trial you can work with CO 5 as you are used too. Don't run both version at the same time, however.
If you like to stay with 5 after the trial, just uninstall 6. If you like to go for 6, (deactivate and) uninstall 5 and activate 6 with a new key you bought (reduced upgrade pricing). When you upgrade your CO 5 key to 6, a new key will be submitted to you and the CO 5 key will be disabled.0 -

I use Canon 30D, so also not huge RAW files. Also lots of out of memory crashes, even when I just use 5.0 standard capabilities (e.g no dust spot, no vignetting). Seems if there are image rotations and cropping for many images after going thru about a dozen of them it gets out of memory. No Open CL, 4GB memory installed.
PO is still working on fixing this. It is taking a long time though.0 -

Sorry, just getting round to trying this and I have another question. If I move from Capture One 5 Pro to Captuer One 6 (32 bit, because I am still on Windows XP) will it cost me more again to change from the 32 bit version to the 64 bit version if (when?) I get a new PC?

Once you have a license for CO6, either Express or Pro, you can use it for 32- and/or 64-bit platforms, Mac and Windows at any time. Total freedom of choice. Only the amount of activations (self-manageable) will keep in within certain limits. 0 -

Oh, I could even use it for a Mac too? That's a change from the old policy, I think.

Yes, but a fairly old policy. CO Pro was cross-platform from v3 (maybe earlier). CO 3 LE (now Express) acquired cross-platform status during its lifetime (in year 2006 I think). From CO4 onwards, IIRC, all licenses are cross-platform.0 -
I have been experiencing appaling performance from C1Pro V6.1.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. The operating system was newly installed and the system has a Pentium 4 Dual Core 2 E8400 3Ghtz processor and 4Gb of RAM. I changed up to this 64 bit operating system from XP Professional 32 bit because C1Pro V6 was lousy on that and I was advised to upgrade by a C1 Tech at Focus.
I have already gone down the road of raising a support case and after lots of messing around and inconvenience, they have told me they have no idea whats wrong and will look into it. I asked how long a solution would take but havent received an answer.
My performance expectation benchmark is based on my experience of using C1Pro since its introduction at V1, and regularly and often ever since then. I have not had good experiences with C1Pro since the demise of V3.7.10.
An example of how poorly C1Pro V6.1.1 is performing is that the computer will just hang, indefinately, when doing something as simple as just "selecting" only 9 Nikon RAW files, when C1Pro has been the only program running. I can go in to detail about how much RAM etc, needs and uses, when even just being open and not doing anything, plus when you actually try to get it to edit, if need be.
This recent catastrophic experience has left me extremely inconvenienced and frustrated.
PhaseOne support have told me that they have no Knowledge of anyone else suffering performance issues, in fact they say, their feedback suggests the opposite.
This doesn't help me and so far PhaseOne support are unable to, either.0 -
I was just thinking about upgrading to CO Express 6 but having read all the problems and performance issues above I'll be waiting until I'm convinced they are all solved.
I'm currently running CO 5 on WinXP (SP3) with a Core2Duo 2.4GHz and 3 GB of ram with no problems at all, so I'll keep an eye on this forum until the users convince me that Capture One Support has done it's job ❗️ .0 -

A 30-day test drive is the only thing what can convince you. Regarding the issue discussed, realize that satisfied users in general do not post.
Looking at your current hardware, I would say that it fits CO 5 better than CO 6 unless you have a not so heavy workload. Then it could do the job.
In general CO 6 works better in a 64-bits environment and my expectation is that this preference will increase over time with new features get added.0 -
I had tried to run v6.1 Pro 64 bit on a machine with a Core2Duo 3Ghz processor and 4Gb of RAM and it was hopeless, I'd go as far as to say say, unusable.
I then built a machine specifically for CaptureOne with an i7 950 processor, 12 Gb of RAM, and a recommended video card and C1Pro now runs better but I definitely wouldn't say it is not still without problems and I'm talking about v6.2 there. I wont bother installing v6.2.1 until there is evidence to suggest any improvement has been made to address the problems being experienced by users.
My laptop has something like the spec of the machine you are using but with 4Gb of RAM and I wouldn't dream of trying to make C1 Pro V6, work on it. I believe it would be a complete an utter waste of time.0 -
Having said the above, just by chance, while I was trying out tethered operation, I did install C1 Pro on my laptop and certainly for tethered operation with a D300, I managed to get by and that was with (very surprisingly to me) USB connection. I always thought I needed to connect the camera with HDMI.
Anyway, I am very pleased that C1 has enabled tethered operation for me. Very pleased indeed!
Is Tethered Liveview with a D300 not possible with C1 Pro? (or if so, is it only through HDMI?)0 -

CO6 Pro does not (yet?) support live view for Canon or Nikon DSLRs.
Regarding HDMI, have you ever connected your camera to a HDMI-able display (modern flat-screen television set for example?) Maybe it can preview you images. Just a thought.0 -
Yes, its easy to do that but not that practical.
Where shooting tethered through C1 is great because you have pretty much full control of the camera through the program interface and then see the shot "taken" with any adjustments applied, live view on the laptop or computer screen would assist greatly in setting focus up when I am using a tilt and shift lens.0 -
I am very interested to see that even someone who has constructed a system especially for C1 6 is having problems. My nearly new Sony Vaio 64 bit HD all in one is having problems with it, 4 gb ram. Then I saw the post about the video card, need NVidia G force, which my desktop does not have but laptop, running Vista 32 bit, does have it. The desktop video card is not upgradeable, I called Vaio customer support. In any case the program runs pretty much the same on both machines, that is slow but beautiful when it works. Sometimes doesn't work at all, sometimes locks up and has to be shut down with task manager. So apparentlly even with the NVidia card as recommended there are still problems with speed and reliability. I did open a support case but have not heard back. I absolutely LOVE the focus mask feature and the local adjustment which are not there on express. No focus mask on Lightroom either. Express runs fine. On the download page the developers should list video cards recommended and stipulate that program may not function without these cards. There is a page that says it but it takes some work to find it. In fact i can't find it right now. This program is twice price of Lightroom. Really wish it worked better. 0
